Dull coat in an airbrush?

I want to dull coat my Walthers roundhouse before weathering. The rattle can spray seems too coarse for the less accessable places. I was wondering if there is a product that would do the same thing as the spray can only with an airbrush.

You can buy what’s called dulling agent at a body shop … you mix it with the paint … colored or clear and the more you add the duller it gets or vice versa .

Bruce, Dullcote is also available in 1 oz. bottles - I use lacquer thinner to thin it for airbrushing.

bruce,

I do exactly what Wayne does. You will find that spraying Dullcoat from a airbrush will give you much better results then from any can. Easy to thin, easy to spray and also clean.

This Dullcoat in 1 Oz. bottles, it that a Testors product or does it come from another manufacturer?

MY 1000thPOST!!!

i used talcum powder in solvent based paints for years to get a flat finish. don’t know how it works in acrylics though. you might want to experiment a bit before spraying it on your models.

Floequil also has a flat finish. I actually like it better that the Testor’s.

It’s Dullcote, same stuff (more or less) that’s in the can, and is from Testors. As it says on the label, Testors is an RPM Company, the same as Floquil and PollyScale.

Another advantage of using an airbrush for applying it is that you can mix Dullcote and Glosscote in varying proportions to get a semi-gloss finish. I find this especially useful for finishing steam locomotives before applying weathering, and use several combinations ranging from almost straight Glosscote to straight Dullcote on most locos. The unlagged smokeboxes and fireboxes get no clear over-spray whatsoever. Of course, after applying the weathering, you don’t Dullcote it.

Testors Dullcote comes in a square bottle of about an ounce and a half. Number 704-1160 in the Walthers wishbook. I use Scalecoat2 thinner to thin Dullcote for an airbrush. Usually I thin about 50% or so.

Dullcote can ve mixed with Glosscote if a semigloss finish is desired.
