dullcoat or glosscoat

what else can be used to give a dull or gloss coat and can be airbrushed on? rambo1…

Rambo,

Respectfully, you’re question “What else” is vague in that it begs your audience to ask: “What else besides what?”

You’ve been a forum member for a while and certainly are aware that there are solvent and water based paint products that will produce high gloss, flat finishes, and everything in between.

Ok, I hope this helps since you mentioned “airbrushed”:

I’ve switched over to Alclad2 (solvent and water versions) for all of my Clearcoat applications after I noticed how well they performed over other paint brands as far as gloss level hold out and durability. For me, the Alclad2 Aqua Klear even beat out Future Floor Finish. Before that, I used clear products from Testor’s Model Master, Testor’s Acryl, Polly Scale, Floquil, and Future.

If you are looking for spray cans:

Krylon & Rustoleum both have a flat and gloss finish ‘rattle cans’

If you have an air brush:

Microscale, Badger, & Floquil/Pollyscale

In addition to the brands which Jim mentions, Dullcote and Glosscote are available in bottles and can be airbrushed. You can combine them in any proportions to get various semi-gloss finishes, too. I thin them using ordinary lacquer thinner and get good results.

ok thanks I didn’t know you can buy these products in a liquid form to airbrush them. rambo1…

A good rule of thumb is that any paint available in a spray can can also be found as a spray-able liquid, and many more besides.

Rambo1, I understand your asking for products which you can use in your airbrush, to spray on a gloss; or, flat coat, correct? The fact that someone has asked you to clarify, confused me, as I thought your question to have been adequately described.

As has been previously stated: Products available in spray cans, mostly is available in brush-on form and with the addition of thinning (when necessary) is useable in a spray gun/airbrush.

Maybe he is asking what other products similar to Dullcote and Glosscote, do people like for airbrushing? I’d be curious myself, or are Dullcote and Glosscote still the ones people go to?

I’ve used the previously mentioned products but switched to these for a very simple reason: No fuss involved. That is: No mixing, No thinning, No worrying about flow out viscosity. Pour in your airbrush jar or cup…set your air pressure…and fire away. You can also apply these with a paint brush as well [;)][:D]

more good advice thankyou antoniofp45 but what do you use after to clean the airbrush with? rambo1…

For the waterbased Aqua Klear I use a 50/50/ mix of 70% isopropyl alcohol and water. For the other clears, which are solvent based, I flush with lacquer thinner.

Same routine as with the other clears mentioned. [;)]

Where do you buy that stuff? (the Alclad)

Hobbytown stores carry Alclad products.

I’ve noticed that more online dealers are stocking it. Here is a list, but remember that there are a number of stores not on the list around the U.S that are now carrying Alclad2 products. Florida isn’t even listed yet quite a few stores carry it down here as aircraft and R/C modeling are very popular in the “Sunshine State”:
