John and Kathy Smith have done a brilliant job in rebuilding these railroads and creating new trains in West Virginia. This never would have happened without them!

Since Thomas seconded his own comment, I will take this oportunity to “third” it. I had a very enjoyable visit last summer, and if you want a clean motel room from a bygone era, try the Valley View Motel in Mill Valley. It is midway between Elkins and Durbin, and the gas station had as low a price as any, and the little restaurant served basic, filling meals.

A very nice RR and well worth the visit.

Thanks, Tracy, for catching my goof. Mill Creek is correct.

Edmond, I think you meant Mill Creek, WV. A very nice little town.

We rode these trains, along with Cass, in 2005. At that time the Cheat Mt. Salamander was a replica motor car running from Cheat Bridge (really out in the middle of nowhere, to High Falls and then back to Spruce, and back to Cheat Bridge. Anyone know what they did with that? And, do they still have the BL2, which we rode behind on the Tygart Flyer?

Wonderful RR. A true steam train riders delight. Open air cars available, soot, smoke & cinders everywhere on the Durbin Rocket. The sound of the whistle bouncing & echoing off the valley walls (and the bell ringing from the rough rocking rails). Fantastic trip the day before the 2013 season ended. Great photos and great sound recordings. Will have to come back and try the Diesel rides (and another Durbin Rocket). Would like to rent the caboose at the end of the line.
