Does anyone have a good shot of dynamics glowing at night? How about dynamics making heat waves during the day?

No for the dynamic question. Does a GE shooting fire up in the air count? That I have seen. I have also seen them just shot sparks. [:D]
You know I 've always had people ask me if I saw Dyn.Brks. glow, but in 16 years I never have.
Here’s my picture I took from a GE dash 8 that really lit up the night sky. .
I’ve seen EMD shooting fire on the smoke stack at night.
The fire was visible if you stand on a bridge above, but from the ground you could just see
red sparks flying out all over the place.
from as many pics ive seen of fire-breathing GEs, this year is the first time ive ever seen it in person. had just taken a picture(at KC, pic is in the folder on rrarchives) and lowered the camera, looked up as it spit flame[:0], and that was it, not time to get the camera back up[:(!]
but ive seen very early GPs shoot sparks, but no flames from EMD. and never seen glwing dynamics… but now thati think about it, i might try to spend a couple of nights in Chillicothe, at the bottem of the hill, just to see if its possible
It’s not very dramatic looking, but these heat waves are from dynamics. He was stopping to flag a crossing that had malfunctioning lights.

One would have to be in the right place at the right time (after dark!) to see the glow from the dynamic brakes. I’m still waiting!
I’d think that on a GE unit it would be hard to tell the d/b shimmer from radiator heat. Of course, you can tell by the sound when the dynamics are being used.
I think if you see a red hot dynamic brake resistor you better get the heck out of dodge. It’s probably just about to experience a catastrophic failure. The whole point of the fan is to keep the grid cool and the fan runs off a portion of that grid so the more current there is the faster the fans run. If you want to see fireworks just run the dynamics without the fans. It will only take a minuet or two to reach meltdown.
Wow, my question was dug up from the basement I see!
Great pic lahdpop.

I think Jim has a bit too much free time lately. [;)]
Back in the summer(June-July) I stopped to take a pic of a UP Ge unit,AS it approached I got out of the car and walked to the track and before I could get focused the trailing unit blew flame out the exhaust and I pointed to the engineer…The train went on by and when I got back to my car I heard the conductor calling the dipatcher telling her they had a fire in the trailing unit and didnt have enough power to get the train moving…Had to wait on another loco to come from Waco…Dont know if it stopped all the traffic or not but it was really a sight…
Hi Chad [:)]
A lot of free time, no, not really. However, some really good topics can be found that received few or no comments when they were first posted. The topic about sleeping cars, that I recently brought back, had TONS of good info but received only a few replies when first posted. After I brought it back it received more replies that added some additional info. This topic is actually one of the most informative and interesting threads I have seen on this side of the forums. So sometimes it is good to find the shovel and go digging. [;)] [8D] [:D]
Realy great night photo keep up the good work
Just poking a little fun at ya. Keep on digging. Alot of those old topics are good and need to re-surface from time to time for the new heads. Besides, some of the old threads are better as re-runs than a lot of the new junk that was posted this summer.[8D]
