Dynamometer car???

What is this dynamometer car? I saw one at my LHS by Walthers in SP pullman scheme, couldnt tell too much about it in the packaging, wondering if I should get it for my rr. Thanks, Ben

If I’m thinking of the right thing, it’s a car with what is basically a spring-scale inside. you open a door, or look through a window to see the gauge, and pull on a handle that sticks out the back of the car. If it’s behind your locomotive (it has to be I guess) you can see how much pull it has.

it is just as Greg said. It measures the drawbar pull of your train if it is put in as the first car behind the locomotive. One coupler is in a movable draft box that is attached to a spring loaded guage inside. It is pretty fun to see just how much pull you need to move your trains. The ammount lessens after you get started but that is the nature of rolling mass. There is no scale graduations in Oz. or other weight measure so you can only really compare this train with that. Here is a pic of mine with its door open.

I use mine for my passenger trolly service on my layout. [8D] hope ya all enjoy.

These are out of production. So if you see one and it’s your roadname…and you really want it, get it.

I wi***hey made a Santa Fe version, as the Walther’s car isn’t too far off from a real Santa Fe prototype.
