Early 60s thru Early 70s Diesel power

In this time period, does anyone know what the C&O, N&W, and Southern Rwy used??? These were the main railroads that ran thru or interchanged at in my home area in Virginia, Staunton Waynesboro area, Southern had a local that came from Manassas and ended in Harrisonburg, thanks again…

One easy way is to do a Railpictures.net photo search for those years and roads. But most locos prior to the SD40-2 would be appropriate, which were delivered in 75.

For C&O try this link: http://www.northeast.railfan.net/co.html

For N&W try this link as a start: http://nwry.railfan.net/roster.html

Someone else may have a link for the Southern Railway.

Hope this gets you started.

Some of these might help too.

David,

The EMD ‘dash 2’ line came out in 1972, so you just start seeing SD40-2’s in the early to mid 70’s. Depending on the railroad/locale; older F units may still be seen, and early first generation GP7/9/18’s will be there. Early 2nd generation power like the GP30/35 or the GE U Boats would be seen on the mainline, with SD35/SD40/SD45’s as well. Most of the older Alco/BLW/FM engines were gone or being used in local/yard service by that time.

In the Mpls/St Paul area of the midwest, there were still a lot of F units on the Milw/SOO/BN/C&NW…but other areas had no F units. Minority builders were amoung the first to go to the scrap yards.
