Continuing my quest for early diesel power, 1939/40 timeframe I am seeking drawings for a Baldwin VO1000 to scratch/bashed in S scale. Any leads appreciated. I have a copy of "Diesels from Eddystone for photo refferences " but alas no drawings or other data beyond general demensions.
If you searched the Kalmbach magazine index on this site, you would have found listings of at least 3 sets of VO 1000 plans (MR Cyclopedia Vol 2 is one) and that the July 93 S Guagian had plans and a kitbashing article on making a Baldwin switcher.
There is a drawing, perhaps not as detailed as you might like, but with five prototype photos, on page 115 of Carsten’s book “Loco 1 - The Diesel.” That book was published in 1966. This would be something to look for at swap meets. It might be the same plan that RMC published in the March 1966 issue.
Late breaking development: the latest issue (2008:3) of North Western Lines, the magazine of the Chicago & North Western Historical Society, is virtually entirely devoted to Baldwins and includes not only drawings of several types including the VO1000 but also an article on kitbashing one of the CNW Baldwin rebuilds.
My issue just arrived yesterday in the mail so I imagine it will take several days or even weeks for this to hit the hobby shop shelves.
Thanks for the update, The most taxing fabrication will be the oval grill, i’m leaning toward photo etching for details such as louvers, grills as these are not available in S scale to my knowledge. I’ve aquired several S12 models for the bash, The cab and portions of the long hood and side skirt will be reused, ditto for the end platforms and pilots.
