Has anyone installed traction tires on the wheels???

Buckeye,

Installing tires would be a major project. If you prefer tires to Magne-Traction but want to keep your current GG1 shell, the simplest route would be to buy a chassis from a GG1 that has tires and mount your current shell on that.

Yes, the magnets are staked in place on most Lionel GG1s, but that’s not the case on this particular locomotive, or at least not on examples I’ve seen. For these, Lionel used 2-sided tape to hold the magnets.

I have the same engine and both lights work. I installed an Electric RR soundboard in it several years ago. It isn’t great, but it’s better than nothing. I don’t know if they still sell the GG1 model.
