East Mifflin gets a makeover on the N Scale PRR Middle Division

April 2007: East Mifflin gets a makeover on the N Scale Middle Division!

East Mifflin, and M Interlocking, are fictional. The passenger shelter (A PRR Plan B shelter for “unimportant” stations) represents one of many found at spots like Millerstown on the Middle Division. The interlocking tower is a standard Atlas tower without a PRR prototype. This is how the scene looked from when the layout was first finished until now:

Several features of this scene bothered me. First and foremost was that the tower, although a very nicely detailed kit, didn’t resemble anything I’d seen on the PRR in Pennsylvania. Not to say it couldn’t happen, but it seemed unlikely. The second issue was that the platform was wrong. This is a PA Heritage Models PRR shelter, and it comes with a small wooden platform that protrudes out past the shelter sides. I put a nice brick platform in based on the eastbound platforms at Lewistown, PA. Problem is, Lewistown is a far more important stop than I imagine East Mifflin to be. According to photographs like the one of Highland on the Chestnut Hill Branch in Bill Volkmer’s Pennsy Electric Years and PRR standard plans in Jeff Scherb’s Trackside on the Pennsylvania plan book, the platform should be screened stone or cinder. Lastly, I was never quite satisfied with my choice of PRR station colors. The PolyScale Earth was too dark for the lighter color.

Now it looks like:

Now the interlocking tower has been replaced with the Dimi Trains (now offered by Tichy Train Group) interlocking tower kit. It’s also not a true PRR prototype, but it shares some common architectural features with PRR towers. It reminds me very much of LEMO Tower at Lemoyne, PA (which was moved and restored as "

Dave, Looks great either way but I can understand desiring a more prototypical look for a PRR railroad. I think thats the only problem with picking a specific prototype as compared to freelancing; as you get more research you desire to make your own layout fit what you’ve learned. maybe its not such a problem but a way to keep working on the layout and improving over time…

They both look great, but I can say that the second pic has a more natural feel to it for some reason. Maybe it’s the platform, or, oh I don’t know. I just like it better, how’s that?

Thanks! I think it is the platform. It always looked like what it is… styrene.

Geez Dave, Can you still justify the St Louis stopping in East Mifflin??

Just an FYI:

I recently attended a lecture on PRR towers and the one message that they conveyed is that there was no standardization and every tower was different. You can switch out all your towers if you feel it is important and it makes you feel good to do so, but you have a lot of leeway.

I don’t think anything’ll be stopping at East Mifflin unless there’s a stop indication…

Guess I’ll need to erase the “OS East Mifflin” order for Train 33 on my board, huh? I’ll let the M Interlocking operator OS the St Louisan as it blasts past the empty shelter!

Looks great Dave. It just screams Pennsy. Do you have a template for those Keystone signs? My so far my attemps to freehand one have failed.

Nick

I make my station signs using PowerPoint. I build them at roughly 400% zoom so I can see what I’m doing…
