Easy-to-make gravel ground for industries

Hi! I´ve been trying out different materials and methods of making a realistic, but yet easy-to-make gravel ground for industries, countryside stations and train yards. I finally ended up using the method seen here.

Looks good. Tell us about your method.

Rich

Hi Rich,

I made video tutorial explaing the process:

Nicely done video. I’ve subscribed.

Why do you mix white and wood glue?

Thanks for sharing. Well done. I’ve bookmarked this thread for later.

Hi BigDaddy,

Thank you! I mix wood glue (PVA-B type) with water + a drop of soap. In some areas of the world this glue is more know as “white glue”, in some “wood glue” but the actual name is PVA-B. Sorry for the confusion!

Martin, I’ve seen your videos - All very interesting and well done. thanks for sharing.

Thank you Gary! Good to hear you like the videos. More is coming! 40 releases planned for this season. [:)]

Close-up on the gravel surface

Nice work! In Canada (and the US I suppose), there is white glue, and there is the yellow wood glue. The white glue is truly transparent when dry, while the yellow glue has a bit of a yellowish film to it. But the film is hardly noticeable when dilluted. I find it a bit stronger for holding scenery material than white glue (and woodland scenics’ product). I also add a bit of auto window washer to the mix as a wetting agent.

Nicely done video, Martin, as usual. [tup][tup]

Thank you!! [Y]

Excellent! [tup] Thanks for sharing.

Thanks from down under for sharing Martin!

I have a friend who introduced me to making a gravel road (and therefore gravel at the side of a made road) with clay based kitty litter sieved as you have done. I used it for the roads on an On30 exhibition layout I helped build… similar idea slightly different technique. The result can be seen on

I like the idea of the double sieving with the stocking mesh… the finer dust would give a lot more variety in the texture

Thanks again

Trevor

So, are you sponsored in any way by Marklin? Or do you just really like Marklin.

I do admit, unlikely as it seemed at first, the tissue-paper/glue/paint and gloss coat harbor really looked pretty decent. I have a coastal-based module planned that could use something like that.

BTW, what did the kid say when you stole her paintbrush?

Another nice video. I will be using your toilet paper technique for my water scene when I get there.
