I just started my scenery , I have completed constructing my first mountain/tunnel on my layout. I am modeling in mid fall when the leaves are to peak. I was wanting to cover the whole mountain with fall colored trees but I don’t know of any easy ways right off hand. I don’t want to buy that many trees my god that would be outrageous. What is a quick trick I can use to make my mountain look convincingly cover with fall trees? By the way this is n scale
First I’ll admit that I haven’t done this yet but I will be working on a similar project. My first thought is that the trees further back won’t be seen as well as those up front. For the trees closer to me I was thinking of using an old cinnamon broom kitchen decoration (yes got wife’s permission) it has great branch structure and good scale for N. Then I will use WS ground foam in fall colors but like AggroJones post I will most likely dull it down with a wash of acrylic as the colors are pretty bright. For the trees up higher I was planning to use “reindeer moss” (aka lichen) available at Michaels Craft stores. I will be using the natural color to better simulate the branch structure and then use hairspray and roll them in the ground foam. Just placing them on the hillside above the full trees should give the illusion of full trees without the work of making hundreds. The lichen is a little soft so if anyone knows of a better material or how to puff up the furnace filter for deciduous trees I would appreciate it. Hope this help’s at least with spurring on some thought process.
