Ebay and buyer beware

Came across this tonite. Do you think any of the 12 bidders or the seller for that matter, know that this 2025 has the wrong boiler front? Either a repro (the wrong one) or another locos boiler front.
One of a thousand I’m sure. But the description sure makes you think the seller knows what he’s describing.
Buyer beware as always.

Hmm, sharp eye! That looks like a berkshire front end… Can anyone else clarify?

The Doctor Is In!!! I looked in David Doyle’s book on post war lionel. The boiler front looks like the #2026 front. Someone may have made a swap and the seller does not know it or does not want to let on that he or she does. It might also be a #2046 front. In any case, the seller has not mentioned it to bidders. Not a good thing.

A while back, I read that a repro boiler front was offered for this engine for those who wanted a “center” headlight. I agree the seller should have pointed this out. Since “correct” repro fronts are always available for the 675/2025, this will not be the “end of the world” for the buyer…ASSUMING he wants to change it. Joe

You do have a sharp eye! All things considered, however, he seems to be straightforward in his description and has some excellent pictures. The correct front could be easily added, but I think it looks very good with the current boiler front. He does mention that he’s ready and willing to answer questions about it.

A few times in the past, I don’t bother anymore, I have pointed things like this out to sellers by using the ask seller a question feature. Never had one change there listing in response so I concluded they don’t want to know.

From what I have seen of this loco and tender bidding more than $85 would be too high, the cab has paint faiding spots, the tender has mold or something on the paint. This is just from looking at the photos of it, like ebay buyer beware of what you buy.

I’ve actually pointed out a few things to sellers using the ask seller feature as well. In a couple of the cases the seller actually cancelled the auction to relist with the correct information. I’ve found that the sellers that do a lot of trade in trains and have good feedback are usually responsive to corrections/additional information.

Of course, I’ll echo what everyone else says here too “Buyer, beware”.

Dwayne.

Looks like the steam chest/pilot assembly has been replaced, as well. Anybody notice the lighter color?

yeah, i’m willing to bet that it’s orginal though. Most older lionel loco’s are like that due to the cowcatcher not being painted, and the shell is.

I’ve already been wrong once in this thread, so anyone correct me if i am wrong.

I did notice the steam chest pilot section as well. And I believe it’s true that early postwar engines had these areas blackened rather than painted. It seems there’s some models that feature dramatic color differences and others that are less noticeable.
My own 2025 with silver stack has a much, much, closer match in color.
I’m not sure that the story is here.
