With ebay changing their fee structure, was wondering if anyone has found another auction or ebay like site to buy and sell train stuff? I’m tired of ebay and the fee hikes. Thoughts?
Ebay gets bashed on this site all the time. Hey, if you don’t want to play on Ebay then don’t but don’t come on a model railroading website complaining about fee hikes. Sometimes I wonder if people have nothing better to do then complain about the smallest thing. Hey here is an idea. If you don’t want to pay any Ebay fees then why don’t you go down to your local hobby shop or maybe a train show on the weekend and support them. They would be happy you did.
OK read what I said. Im asking if anyone has found another ebay site that they like. My reason was the fee hikes and ebay in general.
You also said that you’re tired of Ebay and their fee hikes, lol. Lets be realistic here, Ebay is the best auction site there is, PERIOD. Sure there are a few wannabee type sites but they too charge fees. Lets just let this topic end before it gets out of hand and turns into another “EBAY SUCKS” thread, ok.
Eh, the screams about these changes are reverberating on all kinds of message boards, not just this one. Huge threads about it too. In particular most sellers are peeved about the ‘no negative buyer feedback rule’ more than the final value fees.
Hmm, I think the OP was talking about selling items, not buying them (seller pays fees) - and selling one offs here & there ain’t gonna work at the Train Shows (and do LHS even do consigment anymore? I suppose some do).
Actually, many, if not, most sellers are thinking this is the direction that eBay’s going - dump (chase away) the one-off, low volume auction/sellers (which made eBay in the first place) and cream-skim the higher volume sellers and on-line stores. THAT is why everyone is asking for alternate sites - they may be needed really soon.
Sometimes I wonder if people have nothing better to do then complain about the smallest thing.
You mean small things like someone asking a simple question about train related stuff on a train forum?
Who cares if its reverberating all over other message boards? Oh and the original poster did say BUY AND SELL train items, mind you he has edited his original post more then once it looks like, lolol.

Et tu, Brute?
Ouch! I liked that!

Like I said above, you didn’t read the original unedited post. [:X]

Ummm…All the people doing the reverberating I would guess…[%-)]
Corporate greed. The band wagon has another rider…
Corporate greed??? Come on Loather, I never expected that out of you. The United States are going into a recession. What happens when a country goes into a recession? Prices go up, production goes down, interest rates go up and then people stop buying things. Look around people, the price of gas has gone way up, the price of food has gone way up, the price of almost everything is going up, including Ebay fees. You really think that Ebay is the only ones raising prices? How many people in the US are losing their homes due to rising interest rates? What about the automotive sector or production sector in general where people are losing their jobs? When people don’t work they don’t pay their bills, when people don’t pay their bills what happens? Company’s like VISA, mortgage company’s and even Ebay RAISE their costs to recoupe their losses. Its been that way since the first dollar was printed. If you guys don’t see the big picture then I feel sorry for you all because you guys are living in a fantasy world. You guys should have a lot more to worry about then Ebay raising their fee’s. Maybe instead of surfing the Model Railroader site people should surf some sites on how the economy works. This will be my last post on this rediculous thread. Keyboard jockeys unite!!![:X]
This site lists some other auction sites. Not sure if its a “for pay” advertiser in disguise.

As a buyer eBay has been good for me. I have trust in my transactions there I may not have elsewhere. I would imagine as a seller one would want to get the most views to get the best price… guess you would weigh that against cost.
One thing to keep in mind is that eBay is under increasing pressure to monitor and police the auctions which is going to drive their cost up. Much like malpractice insurance driving the cost of medical care up…
There are a fair number of local auction sites that cater to people selling things for pick-up which ebay is not so good for.
Only thing I wish I could do is filter all the “buy it now” auctions which are just stores in disguise and are not likely to be a bargain.

TA-The really funny thing about this is YOUR the one that turned it into a rant when the OP was just asking a simple question.[(-D][(-D](say goodnight Gracie…)
Didn’t Ebay just lower their fees?
The only thing I changed was the subject from “Ebay and the new fees?” to “Ebay like sites”. So TA462, get your facts straight before you go shooting your mouth off.
I was asking a simple and direct question. Does anyone know of another site like ebay. I asked a question and gave a reason for the question. I was not complaining but simply stating my reason for my question. I buy and sell and would assume some of the other members do too. So why can’t people just answer the question or if they don’t know don’t post.
“The Whistle Post” and “Tyco” forums have classified section where you can post what you have for sale. There is also an HO Yard Sale forum on Yahoo Groups that has some really good deals on it. (join and list what you have for sale) I’ve seen some other auction sites, but they didn’t have anywhere near the hobby stuff as E-Bay.

Schom,
There’s a Yahoo group called HOYard Sale that is really well moderated, and I’ve found some really good deals there. It’s modelers selling to other modelers, so you avoid the inevitable problem on eBay with sellers not knowing a GP38-2 from waxed fruit. Assuming you’re working in HO, it’s a great alternative. I’ve found similar Yahoo groups for other scales as well.

(Edit) Beat me to it, Loathar. [sigh]
Why not just get a website and post what you have for sale there? theyonly cost about 7 to 14 dollars at yahoo and you can list anything you want. Use a paypal account to accept quick cash or have them send you a check thats all there is too it. I usually dont bid on ebay anymore. I usually barter with people or just do a buy it now if its something I want. Thats just a thought.
i thought this was a reasonable question … regarding price increases due to economy then ebay in australia should be lower due to our booming economy the american dollar gets less in value every day… regarding the message that said something regarding no negative feedback first i have heard of it could someone please enlighten me ( please NO smart arse answers )
The feedback system has been changed so that only buyers can leave negative feedback. At first I did not like the idea of it, and still am not sure it is the answer to the problems, but there is some positeve to it as well. A lot of times buyers are afraid to leave a negative feedback in a bad transaction due to the fact that the seller will automaticaly leave one as well. As a seller, a buyers feedback is usually not that important to me. I never ship until the payment is good. There needs to be something put in place though to signal others that a buyer is not good. I suspect that there will be more non paying bidders now that there will be no effect on their ranking. There is a whole summary of the changes made on their web site http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200801.shtml#2008-01-29054823 including the new price structure.
To get back to the original poster question, here is a link to an online auction ranking site which lists several sites.
