Ebay Security

I was on Ebay today and when I tried to log in my account a new screen popped up saying their improving their security. It then went on to ask me for various information including my credit card number , ATM PIN, social security number etc supposedly to confirm my identity. Also the PayPal website was asking for the same information for the same reason and because I was nervous about providing it I was not able to login and pay for my purchase. Has anyone else had this problem!Credit card numbers are bad enough but ATM PIN numbers? That sounds very risky!

Sounds to me like someone is phishing through the EBay site. Nobody gets my PIN numbers and by law a legitimate site isn’t allowed to ask you for that information. That’s someone gathering info so they can steal somebody’s identity.

Boomer Red,

When in doubt, type in the address of the page you want to visit in your address bar. NEVER follow a link to a log-in page…that’s the oldest trick the phishers use to get your information. I haven’t been on my PayPal page in over a month - I just went to PayPal, logged in and no ‘security upgrade’ window popped up. I think someone was trying to scam you.

I have seen too many phishing emails. I NEVER click on a link that is in an email. If it has to do with eBay or PayPal, I ALWAYS log into the site from their home page that I get from MY OWN bookmark.

I also don’t open or read emails from someone I don’t know, and the subject line doesn’t add up. If they are not in my address book, or I haven’t sent them an email asking for information, forget it, I don’t need it.

I just tried getting into PayPal by typing it into my address bar. The site came up, my email address was displayed over where I input my password. But when I typed in my password the same thing happened again. last night when this happened I typed in my credit card number and name etc thinking it is information paypal had already anyway but did not want to type in my PIN number or bank account number. Also I’m from Canada so I don’t even have a social security number! The problem is if all the fields are not filled out you can’t proceed. So now I have a seller waiting for his money and no way to pay him or communicate with him! Have I mentioned how much I HATE COMPUTERS!

quick, get in touch with paypal and ebay security. contact your bank. run a good scan of your comupter to look for spy ware and other malicious software.

oh and contact the seller, let him know what’s up.

Does the address bar turn green and show a padlock when you go to PayPal indicating a secure site? Try deleting all of your temporary internet files and restarting your browser. If the page you went to last night was a phishing site, they could have sent you a cookie that will tell your computer to go back to their site…

It appears someone has planted malware in your PC. Try clearing history, cookies, private data. I use Linux, not Windows and Firefox browser for the internet so I do not have any security issues. If you use Internet Explorer, clear all Internet data, passwords, history and the Temp file in Windows Explorer. I have not used Windows in three years so others should be able to help.

If you do not recognize an email address or subject matter, delete it and make sure to empty the trash. A lot of people are clueless when it comes to emptying email trash and clearing the Temp file.

Also, in the address bar you should see HTTPS when at a good site. Notice the S. If it is not there, it is suspect.

No reputable site or business will email you and ask for personal data. Some people are beginning to try this over the telephone which does not surprise me. I get telephone recorded messages about a so called issue with my credit card. I do not use credit cards. The phone calls are computer generated.

I buy on ebay a lot and have never ever seen anything like this. I have seen spam with a similar subject in my bulk (Spam) folder quite a few times.

Sounds to me like the problem is on your computer rather than at the EBay site or Paypal site. Just to see if it would affect me, I logged into my account with no problem and with none of the requests for information. It wouldn’t matter if you put the correct address in for EBay if someone has a spy program on your computer as the program could just re-direct to a computer where your information can get stolen.

It sounds like your computer has been infected with a Browser HiJacker…it sits in the background, waiting for you to try to go to a site such as PayPal, then directs your PC to the site crafted to look like PayPal to swipe your information. If you indeed entered your email and password last night on that site, I would log in on another PC as quickly as possible and contact PayPal to take corrective action to protect your account.

I haven’t seen yet when I log into Ebay. Might have to keep a look out. I did get a letter the other day in the mail about a late payment on a credit card. I was wondering how when I made a payment. I called about it and they said I didn’t have a late fee. That was a hacker trying to get me!!! They even had a number to call on the letter, about it. I told the REAL credit card people and they don’t even have that number. You just have to be very careful today. Its so easy to get into trouble.

I agree with the said above.

I have a problem with IE7 where when I type something into google, and click on it, and it will re-direct me to a sponsored google page. kinda weird to me.

The problem isn’t nescessarly harmful on my end…if I type in “NoAdware” to download, and click on it’s link, it will re-direct me to Norton’s web site.

Run a check on your computer, etc.

Try installing Firefox and see if that works. I switched to firefox, and haven’t gone back.

I get email all the time ostensibly from EBay and/or PayPal telling me that my account(s) are in danger and I must immediatly send in an email with (1) my full name, (2) my physical address, (3) my phone number, (4) my socail security number, (5) my account #, (6) my PIN#, (7) my age and DOB, etc, etc. If it were actually EBay, they already have that info on file so why should I have to send it to some character who doesn’t even have an EBay address? Such emails get deleted without being opened in most cases. Some have really good subject lines that fool me long enough to open the email. The instant I see a request for personal info, into the trash it goes.

I see those a LOT in my Bulk Mail (Spam). I have two web based email providers with very good spam control. I do not have to open them up. They get deleted by my email provider. The subject is a giveaway. If it somehow gets into the Inbox, the subject matter is still seen and the message gets deleted. Only the clueless will open them and spammers know the 'Net is Loaded with clueless. One time I saw a message titled, “from you child” Yeah, right. Delete.

Yes, that sounds harsh. It is the law of the jungle. No different than the Wild West. Deal with it or pay dearly.

I just changed my browser to FireFox and now everything seems to be working normally. I was able to login to both Ebay and PayPal so at least now the seller will get his money. I think I’ll cancel both accounts now because it just seems to risky.

If you suspect a security issue with Ebay you should immediately contact Ebay security. Click on security center at bottom of Ebay’s home page and follow instructions. Alternatively, click on live help at top of screen and ask to be connected to security.

We had a big breech of our account by a third party attempting fraud recently. I complement ebay for handling to problem and protecting our account.

You should only look at “my messages” within your Ebay account and not look at emails claiming to be from Ebay.

Just as a matter of principle, I NEVER, EVER put my personal information into a computer. Also, I have an e-mail inbox that allows me to preview a new message without opening it. My deleted e-mail folder would be full of misspelled offers of Rolex watches and prescription drugs from ??? - except that I empty it before I log off, every time.

As the old poker player told me, “Trust everybody, but cut the cards yourself.”

I just sent you an email with Pay Pal’s phone number…good luck.

I’m pretty sure you’ve got a case of spyware on your machine. If you don’t have Windows Defender, get it from Microsoft, install and run it.

Not trying to hijack the thread here. But how do you install a different browser, like Firefox. I currently have MSN internet, and Windows XP.
