Ebay sellers...somehow I don't get it....

Wanna see a strange one?Items 6013496045 and 6013483348 which are pairs of N scale Peco turnouts.Shipping…$26.95!!!..I wouldn’t pay that if the man gave them to me.Ok ,it’s UPS rush service but still,it’s not a heart for transplant that’s being shipped that I know of.Is it me or what?

His cost may not be unreasonable but it’s unncecassary… A USPS large package (padded envelope) will get them to you for $9 tops… $10 if he wants to charge you for the envelope… Not to mention (I don’t know if they do going from US to Canada) but UPS charges a premium for customs work across the border… I know when anything comes From Canada to the US via UPS, they want something like $29 (IIRC) to bring it across, on Top of the shipping price.

Jeff

The shipping cost is about what one could expect to get for the item,so…yes it is unreasonable…to me anyway. And yes,UPS does ship to Canada but with a hefty custom broker charge, which then raises the taxable amount for both GST and provincial level taxation services…And even worse,UPS ground service is slower than USPS/Canadian mail service combo who,by the way, don’t charge any broker fees.

I seems to be a way that some sellers are getting around eBay’s listing fees - sell something for next to nothing, and make your money on the shipping charrges, which eBay does not collect their share of.

not only that , 50% of the time when i get a shipment through canada post i don’t get charged any import duties or gst , if a shipment comes in UPS then for sure you’re going to get hit with both PLUS the UPS brokerage fee . at this point i don’t even bid unless they’ll ship USPS

According to the listing:
“Shipping to Canada via insured, express mail is $16.95”

The $26.95 is to the rest of the world via UPS.
Express mail to Canada is probably going to be faster (and obviously cheaper) than sending it UPS. And as FundyNorthern states, he’s probably trying to avoid some of the cost of Ebay’s listing fees by selling low, but charging more for shipping. [:D]

Jeff

I think ebay has lost it’s luster.

I refuse to bid when I see shipping charges beyond what is stated via Fed ex, UPS, USPS or whatever.

I am aware that fees for auctions have gotten expensive and tend to agree that sellers in some cases are working around the system in this way.

If you are still getting a great deal by paying a very low price for the item, but a little more for the shipping costs, what difference does it make?

Jeff

you can’t give the seller the satisfaction of ripping you off on shipping. if people pay the overcharged shipping then that seller will keep overcharging.(on purpose)

He’s probably not trying to gouge anyone. He states the shipping charge up front. By charging more for shipping, he realizes that people (buyers)will bid less for the item, to keep their overall costs the same.
If I get an item that usually sells for $8, plus $4 shipping, for $1, plus $10 shipping, I’m saving myself a buck. The seller makes almost the same amount of profit, and just cheats ebay out of a few cents. So who cares? I’d rather see a seller make a few more cents than ebay.

Jeff

If it is a 200 dollar brass engine I purchased for 1 dollar… I could care less about shipping. Now if it is a walters coal mine retailing at 30 dollars… I might as well order it from the LHS.

OK, now I understand the point you were trying to make. Simply a common sense approach, avoiding paying a total price that is out of line.[:D] Makes sense to me. Thanks for the clarification.

Jeff

The difference will be in the total cost of the item. Why pay $1.00 plus $12.00 shipping when you can buy the item for $10.00 at your LHS? There could be exceptions, like out of production models, rare collectibles, etc., which some buyers will pay ANY price to get. My experience has been to avoid the high postage auctions and the ‘bidding war’ auctions. Eventually, the same item will come up for bids from a respectable seller who won’t overcharge for postage and handling.

I’ve just watched 2 or 3 N scale Big Boys sell for well over $300.00. I’m not saying they aren’t worth it, I’m just saying that patience rewarded me with a Big Boy for under $200, including shipping. I want another one, but I will wait it out. $300 is more than my budget allows!

Patience has rewards!

Darrell, rewarded, and quiet…for now

You and counter weight are stating what I would have thought were nothing more than common sense approaches to “shopping” on ebay. I originally responded to Counter Weight’s post because I thought he was against using ebay because some sellers sell cheap, but charge much for shipping, thus cheating ebay out of some of their profits. But his view was the same as yours, not wanting to overpay for an item and shipping when it can be bought locally for less. As I stated earlier, an obvious common sense approach for anyone dealing with ebay (and probably n

Some of the buyers are “off the reservation” also. I’ve seen buyers bid locos way over what they can get them from mail order(including MO shipping). These are locos that are still readily available! And so it goes…

I think the fact that the holidays are coming up has some part to play in the pricing. It seems that lately some things are selling for a lot more than they did a few months ago. This is from sellers who think they can make more from people’s “holiday shopping” and from buyers who get caught up in the bidding frenzy and end up paying too much.
I imagine that in about two months, things will be “back to normal.”

Guys,

I’m not sure there’s anything to “get” on this one.

His charges, which include $5.50 for Priority in U.S. are darn close to actual charge for the service. Those higher charges are for shipping to Canada and the rest of the world.

There are plenty of Ebay sellers that gouge for shipping, but it doesn’t look like this guy is one of them.

Like I tell my buyers READ THE AUCTION!!!

Read the auction? Read the auction? Why would I want to do that? It is so much more fun to ignore the actual write up and then complain that the seller is a rip off artist because I didn’t read the thing. Read the auction? Come on . . . what are you going to suggest next? Get the facts before arguing? What’s the world coming too???

This is an on going problem on ebay! I buy and sell items in the winter on ebay too! I am seeing allot of new P2K engines out there from time to time listing for a cheap amount but 15 to 20 dollar for shipping! Here is another evil thought for you guys to think about. If they list a brand new engine for 99 cent and shipping is 24 dollars, and it does sell lets say, and the seller does his ebay sales for a living, does he get to deduct the 24 dollars for shipping on his taxes at the end of the year and show the 99 cents as profit! I’ll bet this is being done! Seeing allot of cheap prices and inflated shipping. I watched an auction that was relisted 4 times last winter 1st auction $30 & $25 S&H, 2nd $20 & $25 S&H, 3rd $10 & $25 S&H, and last $5 & $20 S&H. I won the auction and was the proud owner of a P2K GP9, the seller was a winner to because he had hardly any listing fee, and tax man did not get squat!
