Effects of Metrolink's installing ATS

There are many articles about Metrolink installing automatic train stop (ATS) on all their routes. That installation brings up many questions.

  1. Do all BNSF routes already have ATS in place? If not what routes is this installation going on?

  2. Is the installation being installed on UP owned tracks? If so does UP have any locomotives with it or all of them ATC? If being installed on UP tracks is there still a FRA waiver not to install ATS on UP Locos? Does UP have any ATC in the Metrolink area?

  3. I assume all Metrolink owned track will have ATS. In light of question 2 will ATS locos be required on BNSF and UP locos when operating on Metrolink tracks?

  4. Is any of the track class 5 or better (or are there plans) so with this installation speeds could be increased to 90 MPH or more? Would the above tracks be required to have all locos with active ATS to increase the max speeds?

  5. What is the progress on each of the lines Metrolink operates on?

Well, I’m no expert but, I assume that if thay are goint to install ATS on there system that some will be on UP tracks. I hope that this will help make things safer. Hope youre’ question get’s answered.! sinceraly, Justin
