I’ll be overnight in Effingham, IL on July 9 and will have the evening and next morning to railfan…any suggestions on good trainwatching spots? Thanks very much.
At least take a look at the Effingham RR in the Industrial Park (If you found the big stinkin’ cross, you’re real close…East of Raney Street)…CN-IC would be busier than CSX-CR
Effingham is, as Mudchicken indicated, where CN and CSX cross. There is a depot there and is probably open to service the Amtrak trains running on the CN. The industrial park is southeast of the crossing/depot.
CN probably runs 20-25 trains daily. I have no idea about CSX. You may want to run over to St. Elmo where the UP crosses the CSX and then go south to Kinmundy where CN and UP cross. There are trains which move off of CSX onto the UP at St. Elmo and trains to and from CN/UP at Kinmundy.
Not sure what runs on the old B&O route paralleling US 50 these days. I heard rumors the old B&O CPL signals are falling fast. If you have time, you might want to run down to Salem and grab a shot or two of those antiques.
