El Paso PCC cars may return to service

I saw them in 93. They have stored outside. One was sold and moved to Cloudcroft NM to be used as an office. Now that car is back east being restored. All the PCC are former San Diego.

Were these cars still running when they were retired? Is the high cost due to new regs? Would it cost a museum this much to get them running (even without free volunteer labor)?

Is any of the original El Paso trackwork still in place? If so, can it be refurbished and used?

$1-2 million a piece for refurbishment sounds about right. SEPTA in Philadelphia had PCCs rebuilt for the Route 15 line by Brookville Equipment about 3 years ago. They cost aro0und 1.2 million apiece.

I last saw those PCC cars when they were stored downtown in 1977. They were in good shape then. I’d go for the extra bucks and an American-made product.

Truly excellent news. El Paso has so much old character and these restored streetcars will only add to it. I really see El Paso as a diamond in the rough, and it could really shine with some polishing.

That is great news for PCC car lover’s.

They should check with Muni in San Francisco about rehabbing the cars and what it entails. Also check with New Jersey about the PCC cars that were retired about two years ago.

Can’t wait until it opens, once I’ve worked out how to get to El Paso from the UK I’ll be there first day of running!!!

I wish my state of confusion I mean New Jersey, would get their PCCS running again.
