Does anyone know- will a Marx electric motor fit into a Marx 198 or 401 windup loco shell?
A lot of Marx locomotives were sold in both windup and electric versions. A postwar electric motor that uses the same front crossmember as the windup should fit in either of those shells - there isn’t anything special about the windup motors in either a 198 or a 401. I suspect an electric motor from an 898 or a 591 would probably fit. Now the disclaimer: I haven’t personally made those swaps, so I’m not speaking from direct experience. I’m typically changing electric locos over to windup instead…
Here’s a guy who has. A couple of his Marx videos:

Here’s the location of his VERY entertaining and informative channel:

Hope this helps!
I actually have both an electric and (very sorry-looking) clockwork 591. The only differences consist in the actual motor, which is theoretically interchangeable.
