I’ve gone through the archives reading the old posts on electromagnetic couplers for N scale. The options listed where Kadee’s #307 (ugly and not exactly N scale), a hinge on a permanent magnet (difficult to implement on my layout), or links that required purchasing videos or old magazines (OK, I’m cheap).
Any new ideas or links to something that can be built and has been tested would be great. I’ve tried to make a couple of electromagnets but have not had much luck.

i’ve done the permanent magnet way and was not happy to have to disguise the magnets and be tied to one spot for uncoupling. not to mention unscheduled uncoupling. with the electro magnets you’re still tied to one spot and have to put a push button on the control panel or run extra wiring to a button near the magnet. then there is the additional maneuver to seperate the cars and pu***hem to a desired spot. having to cut holes in the layout does not make me happy either. since my layout is only 1ft deep i am using rix picks to uncouple and i’m very happy with them. my club has been wanting to get the electro magnets for their ho and n layouts but i use bamboo skewers to uncouple in ho.
