electronics supply

I’m ready to order some dpdt switches and terminal strips for Tortois installation. looking quickly at newark electronics site and radio shack they are asking about $5 for each on average. got to be a better way, or i’m looking at the wrong things.

i’d almost be willing too use huge electrical wall switches if they were dpdt. cost 1$. i know they sell alot of these and that helps but whats the going price for these things? dont want to feel abused.

any good online sources? anyone find these things at home depot etc?

thanks for the help!

I’ve ordered from http://demarelectronics.com and http://oselectronics.com and I was satisfied with both. The Ocean State site has pictures of just about everything, but Demar is a bit cheaper. Both ship quickly. Both, of course, charge for shipping (reasonable) so figure out everything you’ll want for a while and order it all at once. Demar advertises in MR, which is a brownie-point thing for me.

Check All Electronics. Their DPDT center off toggle swttches are $1.60 each or 10 for $13.00 (Catalog # MTS-12). A DPDT ON-ON toggle is $1.25 each, or 10 for $10.50 (Catalog # MTS-8).

i used to work at a computer store that also sold surplus electronics parts (yes it was like going to a great big toy store every day!) and we used to sell resistors for 2 cents each . radio shack was selling them for $1.20 for a pack of 5 . this was in the early 80’s but i imagine the price difference between radio shack and any electronics parts store is still similar . never buy parts from radio shack unless you absolutely need the part today , they’re always cheaper somewhere else

Thanks for the help. i thought radio shack was alot and normally do avid it. ive started looking at the sites provided and already found some good options.

I just bought $100 of stuff from All electronics. Prompt delivery, and nothingback ordered. Couldn’t find anyone cheaper.

Beware that their 2-terminal strips for $0.40 each are indeed 2-screw strips. Not as spacious as the 2-terminal 2-row strips, but hard to argue against the cost. I bought 35 of them for under my layout. Also bought 18 of the 7-terminal double row strips for terminating my tortoise switch machines. Good deal as well.

I just wi***hat I’d bought more stuff when I did, but I like to tinker and build…

any one know where i can get some regular 2 way toggle switches to replace my standered, bad looking switches that i can string together into 1 wire like the standered atlas ones do, cause i only have 1 ac slot on my power pack but i don’t know much about wiring yet, and i don’t have the money for a book cause i just bought a trackwork book, and a bunch of track , and the $27 i have left i need for a soldering iron and track laying supplies.

If you use two power packs you can use spdt. I bought surplus charging pacts fo $5.00 and they work fine. The directions came in the trotois box.

don’t have a tortis, just have the swithch machines that came with my turnouts, i don’t have a job yet either so i don’t have alot of money right now either, how much do tortisis cost, just found out about them in the book i got?
Thanks

I searched long and hard for electrical for my current project and this was the best bargain I could find. Not installed yet but they appear to be good quality. At their prices, I can replace them 10X and still be money ahead. Quick, easy, and friendly.

Tortoises cost about $18.95 inless you buy in bulk, like packs of 6 or 12, then you get a price discount. So if you know how many you will need, then it is best to safe up your money and buy in bulk. If you do not want to wait because it will take you too much time to save up the $$, and you you are anxious to get started, then I guess you will need to buy one at a time.

That’s MSRP, even my LHS which isn’t known for low prices gives me a break on that, but the best deal I’ve seen on Tortoises so far comes from Empire Northern.

Randy, I cannot find Empire Northern online, what is their web address?

Walthers has a sale on today for Tortoises, $13.98 each !!! Good price !!!

Tim’s good, knows what he’s doing, and still sells for a great price. I bought my last batch of DCC supplies from him and certainly will buy more.
And if there’s something you don’t see on the web site -email, he probably has it anyway.
