If anyone is planning to Railfan in the Elkhorn area on the Union Pacific had better get that Station sign in Elkhorn now. Elkhorn is now Omaha. The Union Pacific built their line through Elkhorn which put Elkhorn on the map. But now it’s all over. RIP Elkhorn,Neb. You will be missed.
It’s too bad because there is a very nice park in the city of Elkhorn right along the Union Pacific and I always enjoyed train watching there. Elkhorn really took care of that place and kept it nice. I have a feeling that Omaha will let it go bad pretty fast.
The concept that one city could just be annexed by another city like that. It boggles my mind. That’s just crazy.[xx(]
Omaha is just way to Powerfull. What Omaha wants Omaha gets. And Elkhorn was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I would guess Elkhorn will keep it’s identity in the UP timetable, at least as long as the old center siding is kept.
Jeff
Agreed. I could see if Elkhorn was not incorporated, but a city of almost 8,000 just being snatched up? Are the laws different in Nebraska that allow this?[?]
I’m pretty sure there are a few cities up here in Northern Illinois who would love to do this.[}:)]
Sounds like the railroads that the UP assimilated.
I’m pretty sure that Elkhorn couldn’t be annexed to Omaha without the approval of some sort of majority (voters, town councils, whatever) in both places involved.
And Jeff’s right–if Elkhorn is a designated location on the UP main line, that name will remain–in UP employee timetables and on dispatchers’ screens, if nowhere else.
Carl and Senshi - The Supreme Court ruled that Omaha could annex Elkhorn. So, actually, a town of 8,000 being snatched by Omaha is not only feasible, it is reality.
This battle has been going on for over a year now. It seemed like Elkhorn was going to get by, but then Omaha took it all the way to the Supreme Court and they ruled in favor of Omaha. So, for all of the doubters out there, it did happen.
Personally, I wanted Elkhorn to win, but I guess that’s just the way things go.
Whoa! There have to be some grisly details behind all of this, then. Probably Omaha wanting some land beyond Elkhorn and the little town got in the way.
Are there some extenuating circumstances involved here? Did Elkhorn have its own municipal services and/or schools?
All of the details are in this article:

Also, sorry that I said the Supreme Court ruled on this. It was the Nebraska Supreme Court, not the U.S. Supreme Court. I guess I should make sure I have my facts straight before posting! The point remains though, Elkhorn is now Omaha.
Oh, I get it now. Nebraska law.[%-)]
I don’t understand all of this stuff, I’m just saying what I do know, which in the grand scheme of things is not very much. If you really want to try to understand all of this stuff, I would recommend doing some research on your own. It’s too much for me to comprehend, especially when I’m trying to figure out chemistry, gerund phrases, Spanish, and world history at the same time.
Welcome to the world of politics, Willy. I guess that you are getting a jump start on the Political Science class next year. [4:-)]
Something rattles around in the back of my mind that I read: Omaha runs right up to Elkhorn and - here is what I am not sure I remember correctly - owns property all around Elkhorn. Kind of like you own the entire yard behind your house, except for the birdy bath right in the center.
Maybe that puts it in a little better perspective.
Thanks for the link. I had no idea this could happen in America without the annexeeee getting a chance to vote.
What ever happend to the voters. I thought that voters had the choice wether to annexx or not.
This is just wrong. Omaha is just way to power hungry.
You think you have problems.
Mayor Dailey wants to expand a airport that is connected to chicago by a thread (O’Hara) that he does not have the money to do.
He goes in and takes over another towns properity.
That town even deployed the National Guard to Protect itself.
That is the same Mayor who in an early Sunday Morning tore up an airport because President Bush protected Disney World and Not Chicago after 9/11.
You got to be kidding.
