Ray and Thayne Here is a pic of my backdrop when I was looking at how I would like my yard. It is 1/16” hardboard (masonite) taped,mudded,and painted. It can be done but takes just a little more effort and is easier to handle then drywall. Just my take on it.
Just got back from Sam’s Club. Tomorrow I w**k and the temp should be in the low 80’s. I have a new hire with me for the first half (not my new partner). I shot another video and put it on YouTube.
I took a good look at my first iteration of my addition and got rid of it. Decided the way it was laid out I would loose most of my yard. Thought about it for awhile and re did it. I am much happier with it and as a plus I will have an additional 90 inches of yard spread over 3 yard leads. I was going to shoot a photo but pencil on plywood does not come out well. I will draw out something later to show you. I also planned out my bench work for it and after I figured out how to add correctly it went quickly. Hope the link works.
Here is Callista, she is named after Pope Callistus I (+222). Her vestments are the correct colors for a Pope and Martyr. We acquired her as a kitty on the feast of St. Callistus, who BTW was the first one to change his name when he became pope. (His given name was Mercurious, which of course would not do.)
Ray and Barry The tape looks like open grid,self stick, fiber glass,sticks very well,and much better to use then the paper tape is. All you have to do is put it on and go from there,no putting mud on and then the tape and more mud. The hardboard is 4x8 and I had enough room from the top of the benchwork to the bottom of the floor joists to be able to do it. It isn’t the best job,but it works for me.

Worked a 10 hour day today and while I can say I am tired, legs hurt some and bottom of the feet as well, I feel better tonight than I did last night. I picked up some stuff just from asking questions but no real training. But the shop was busy and I made my self as useful as I could. I hope Tuesday it is a little slower so Steve (Manager) can so me some of the computer stuff. At this point I feel some what worthless. If I could use the computer could have done much more, like giving phone quotes on tire prices. Be nice if I could cash a customer out after the work was done!
I was of some help, get the contact information, inspect the vehicle before the work order is entered in the computer, moving them into the bays.
I better get out of here, I will be opening Tuesday. Have to be there at 6:45 AM. So I have to be up and moving at 5:00 AM.
Jerry, is that what you mean ?? or did you intend on asking about ControlMaster 20s in DC.?
If it is the latter, I use three of them and like them very much. One thing you should know about them though is that there are two different styles of them even though they look much the same. One is solid state with no fan in it., and the other isn’t and does have a fan to help keep it cool. They both work fine, the fan one is a little noisier, but the catch comes in when you try to swap the walk around controllers. That doesn’t work. They need the controller that came with that particular unit. Here in Canada they are worth $300.00 plus a piece. I got mine off of Evil Bay from separate sellers and got all three for about 275.00 total. That sure beat the heck out of about $1000.00 retail, and have had no problems with them for four years now, since I changed over to them.
J.R. I was watching a DVD I just picked up and it had a 47 minute film on the NH shot in 1941 or '42. Lots of footage of an I5. The DVD is from the Ultimate Trains set and consists largely of promotional film shot for various RR’s in the '40s and '50s. It is interesting footage and largely colour.
Jerry, I too was wondering if you are enquiring about a DCC system as I saw your posts on that other forum. I went with DCC but if I had chosen Unitrack I might have just stayed with DC as Unitrack turnouts are power routing so blocks are at a minimum. If your locos aren’t DCC ready then putting decoders in them might be a bit of a challenge. I’ve put in 7 or 8 so far and they sure aren’t as easy as HO! I have a MRC Prodigy Express that I bought a few years ago and I really like it especially the hand held throttle. I have it on an 8’ cord and can control trains from many different angles and both sides of my little layout. It wasn’t expensive and was all I needed. For my N scale layout I bought a Dynamis wiresless but am undecided at this point if it was a good decsion as throttle control seems slow but I haven’t used it much, just to test run locos on a bit of track.
we are in Berlin today and although the weather is quite nice, we take a long walk through the Deutsches Technikmuseum (German Technical Museum). This will occopy all of the day, as there is lots to see.

I fear train stuff is still on hold until I get the windows installed on 04NOV11. The den is where my model work bench is located and all my materials for the layout are boxed with the books in the dining room.
Good news is the parts for the rolling stock dresser arrived Sunday and the dresser is assembled to the point that it is in the train room. I need to putty the screw holes, add the drawer fronts, and paint it.
39F this morning but no frost on the screens of the car. Dropped the F350 off at the dealers to see if they can find the cause of a part throttle bucking/misfire that doesn’t throw trouble codes. It’s driving us nuts.
We were a verbose bunch yesterday. Lots of posts to go through. I also used the new self adhesive mesh tape to tape my drywall. I agree it’s easy to use and with the 1/2" drywall it went well needing 3 coats of mud to get the job done.I will use sheet styrene form a sign supply store to cove the corners where needed.
One drawback to a bigger layout is you can go a lot longer between cleanings. I need to do a major tidyup before proceeding as there are bits of track and foam and track bed all over the tables. I do have the foam recut and fitted up though and once the track is proven and functioning correctly I’ll put in tunnel liners and ballast the sections that will be hidden.
Ulrich - that is a very impressive museum you’ve taken us to. The cutaway steam engine is fantastic.
Charlie - the NH video was probably the NH at w…k one that was done in the late 40’s. I agree it is a great movie and I love all the shots of the I-5’s (all of which were retired by 1949). The New Haven had the only streamlined steam in New England as well as pioneering electrics and lightweight trainsets (Comet, trainX varients, the original Turbo, etc) as well as piggyback service in the late 30’s.

Well today is my “full day” so I suppose I should get a move on soon. I’ll need to wash some clothes sometime today so’s I’ll have some for later. Maybe during lunch. Brenda has been doing her Mom’s laundry on the available times she has to do laundry. Harvest should be over, but they still are staying open late and on Saturdays for the few stragglers. They’ll lollygag around and wait until the elevator goes back to it’s normal hours then start complaining because they are closing early and they can’t get their crops in fast enough. Ask them where they were when they were open, they’ll say they had to wait so long for the others that threw them late etc, etc, etc. Any excuse to blame someone else. Some just need to complain. Those ill treated farmers. And it’s always the same ones too. Unfair.[%-)]
BUT! One should never speak bad about farmers with your mouth full.
OH! almost forgot. Spoiled Missy the overweight dog. Get this… She no longer barks to come in from potty time. Nope. Blue, the neighbors yellow Lab does. Yup. Missy pulls her plumpness up to the back steps, either stands there or sits down and Blue goes “woof woof”. This took a little bit for me to catch on to, but I watched from the window the last couple days and that’s what happens. Good morning. It’s 55° and clear. The high is due to be 83° and it will be sunny.
Well I didn’t get much cleaning up done on the layout yesterday as I got called on to do other things. Can’t complain much as I got lunch out of it and a garlic rotisserie chicken. I know what I’ll be eating today. Hopefully I’ll have time to work on the layout. I did manage to get the trash cans out to the roadside last night. Three trips, one can per trip. From the trailer to the road is downhill so that made it a little easier. Still, by the second return trip I was pretty slow. It isn’t easy with just one foot. As for the other foot, well I’m actually walking on the side of what’s left of my ankle. I don’t recommend it. By the third and last trip I was wiped. I had to stop and rest a little a couple of times on the way back to the trailer. Hopefully there will be nothing demanding today. Last night I ordered a good used Olympus D550Zoom camera. The one I have is acting a bit flaky. To turn it on you pull the lens cover to the right until it locks. It shouldn’t turn off until the cover is unlocked. However it seems that the switch is going bad and just lightly brushing the lens cover causes it to turn off. I know that eventually it’ll get to the point that it won’t work at all. So, as I said, I ordered a good used one that the owner says works with no problems. It’s just $22 and that’s much less than the $80+ quoted to fix the one I have. I have a much newer Nikon L20 I can use but it doesn’t let me get as close as the old Olympus does. My parents help pay for my model railroad stuff from Ebay. They don’t pay for my cameras or what I buy outside Ebay. Well, that’s all for this morning.
At w**k this morning. In a little bit I have to get a new security badge for Disney Access. Should be good weather today. The new hire with us today seems like a pretty good guy with a couple years of experience.

Duke, Love that space. I wish we had known that we were going to model when we designed our house. We have a great room, and the layout has taken over the room, but we switched to operations after the layout was well on it way. It amazing how thing evolve.
Curt, Your engine facility will be a fun addition to your layout. You are expanding like a madman.
Lion, For our backdrop, Larry painted on the finished sheetrock. It paints well. He used the Bob Ross style of painting.
Curt: It looks like you do your track planning the same way I do. Make a drawing for reference while working from a master plan in your head instead of making and constantly having to revise a CAD file. I tried CAD planning a few times but found it lacking as it usually depends on a certain manufacturers track.

The virtual LION continues wandering through the regions of NYC, today he is in Irvington, New York, along the tracks of the Metro-North Commuter Railroad, the equipment is the new M-7 car. Irvington is where my grandparent’s used to live. I remember that there was a Cities-Service gas station on the corner of Broadway (yes, that Broadway) and Main. There was a heritage center across the street from my grandparents apartment building. I stopped in there for a look-see. I told the old man there “My grandparents used to live in that building.” He looked at me, and said “Smith”, which of course was exactly right. The town has not grown an inch in 50 years. It cannot. It is bounded on the west by the Hudson River, and on all other sides by the huge estates of the rather-very-wealthy. The town began life as a riverboat stop and as a place to put stores, businesses, and churches for the comfort of the wealthy, and as a place where those who serve them may live.
