Today the Diner has been moved to Beautiful Helen, Georgia! The leaves are turning, Oktoberfest is winding down, and preparations for Thanksgiving are being made.
I felt a bit sick today, my left side was hurting. My job is not of the nature where I can call in sick or take a day off, but thankfully, it wasn’t a long day. I suspect a possible Kidney infection.
Orders some cranberry juice, taking a sip, and makes an “ewww” face
Prayers and thoughts to those who were affected by Sandy, or various other maladies.
Brad
(P.S., yeah, it may be JUSSSSST before midnight, but the train was running ahead of schedule)
Gidday All, a hot chocolate and one of Rays Butterscotch Toll House cookies, if he"s got one to spare that is, please.
Sandy still the lead story on the evening news here, down under, which is a little ironical as the past few days has been shorts, t shirt and, for my thinning, read, balding head, sun hat weather. Currently 55 F with a high of 66 F forecast tomorrow.
Helen , Georgia, eh!. Had to google it, thought we were in Southern Germany "til I read that it was a cunning plan by the town fathers to stop the decline in the town. Great roads for motorcyclists [^o)].
Welb…it is another rainy, cold, blustery day here…one of several we had.
Today is going to be a somewhat slower day for us’uns…I had another chemo/radiation session yesterday and so, my energy is a little on the low side…hopefully the session tomorrow will be the last one…and I won’t need another set…dang thing[xx(][banghead]
Sandy did take a swipe at some beachfront around Sarnia…which made for some interesting times…
Chloe, I’ll have a coffee and a breakfast bagel for now please…I’ll be at the RC looking over the papers here…
Her’s food for thought Or FYI for all you who are oldER.
Make sure you put ANY and ALL Important relatives on your Medical Contact, notifications and discussions lists! This INCLUDES NAMING SPOUSES of your Children or WHOMEVER you want to, or should or could be in contact with your Drs, hospitals, nurses, hospice care workers, ETC!
DON’T ASSUME they will talk to someone important to you such as SPOUSES OR INLAWS {children’s spouses}!
Here’s the scenario: MY MIL is on hospice home care. MY FIL had to go to ER Tuesday for problems. Wed. he returned to hospital ER and put in motion the hospice “respite care” clause for MIL in case he had to stay in the Hospital. That means MIL goes into the hospital too, to give FIL a break as primary caregiver, while he is recouping.
Hospice called here, but since My Other Half {MOH} was at work, The hospice nurse who called spent 15 minutes telling me why she couldn’t talk to me because I was not on the “contact list”, EVEN THOUGH I AM MOH’S LEGAL SPOUSE. I could have made decisions without MOH, but I was NOT on the ‘contact list’.
Now, I know what the FIL and MIL’s Advanced Directives, Living Will, and Final wishes are,and have the paperwork here in the house SHOULD IT BE NECESSARY TO USE. BUT I CAN’T as I am NOT on the official “CONTACT LIST” ! SO it is NOT like I am in the dark about these matters.
So, NOW we will have FIL and MIL {actually INSIST THEY DO} put me on ALL “Contact lists”
Most of the roads are clear but over 10,000 people are still without power. Mostly due to trees still on the ground that need to be cleared before power can be restored. Some of the street lights over I-90/SR-2 are still on the ground and the anemometer from the airport is still missing. It’s been raining here constantly for 7 days now with over 6” of rain on the ground. If HD garden center is open I need to pick up about a yard of dirt to fill in the hole in the tree lawn and some siding for the garage.
Yesterday was my first day back in the office trying to “clean up” most of the bad bridges. The guys down the hall continue to receive reports on damaged, off station, or missing ATON.
Good morning. It’s 50° with 97% humidity and dense fog. Later it’ll be mostly sunny with a high of 82°.
Well the morning will be pretty much shot. I have to go down to my parents place this morning and see that my mother gets her breakfast and morning meds then be there to watch over her until my father gets home. Later I have to go to town to pay bills, buy gas and groceries and do whatever else I need to get done.
Took Mon. & Tues. off of work because I do not work well in the middle of a hurricane…asked the boss for a pair of work gloves and was given a hard time about it (was told they did not wear out working…insinuating I don`t do any work)…worked 13 hours yesterday removing trees from one of the lines the RR owns…and was expected to work without a lunch break…
I have an interview for a sheet metal shop today that was suppose to be Tuesday last week…but was stuck in Middletown NY for 4 day repairing some washouts that happened last year on the old Middletown & New Jersey RR.
Working for a shortline RR is not the thing to do with your life unless you are buddy-buddy and/or are related with the boss/owner .
Power came back on about 8:30 last night. After manually heaving the garage doors open last night, I pulled the car in and turned off the headlights. It didn’t get dark. The lights came on while I was parking the car.
I went to the kitchen, set up the coffee maker for the morning and reset the clock. It was so nice to come downstairs to coffee this morning.
The Burbs of Boston did not really suffer much out at the edge of the storm, but there were a lot of trees down on power lines and there are still thousands without power. But, the weather has been mild and the biggest issue we’ve had is keeping stuff in the freezer from thawing out. Bags of ice work pretty well. We were only down for 27 hours.
Coffee and a big ole piece of peach PIE please. Thanks. No, no boiled peanuts for me. Yuck.
Pretty nice load of future wards of the state last night, but not a whole lot. Most all, save a couple, were what I would call trick or treat age. Haven’t had the teenagers dressed in regular clothes with a couple dabs of something on their faces or a goofy hat fleecing the kiddies candy for a couple years now. Nor have we had the influx from other towns, namely Springfield and Riverton arriving by the van load either. Most seemed to be from here or maybe their parents grew up here and bring their little tax deductions to see Grandma and Grandpa and then head out to reap the benefits of the old stomping grounds in safety. I don’t have a problem with that. It’s the ones who load up and hit us by bus loads because they can hit more houses in less time and probably more lights on per block, so that means a higher take in less time. Candy isn’t all that cheap you know, though that’s not the sole reason, but that makes it less for the neighbors kids.
Enough of that. Still w**king around the house and mow that Halloween is over, I no longer have an excuse to leave the spider webs up around the front door so they must come down I suppose. I use them as cheap and easy to install Halloween decorations. Brenda doesn’t really care for the real stuff, she would rather buy fake spider webs and install them. Myself, I say that’s a waste of money when nature provides for free. Like buying leaves to spread around. Why. Which reminds me, they have to get gone here soon too. My reasoning of they act as an alert that trick or treaters are coming is also no longer valid.
Also pray for the workers who are trying to restore power to those affected by the storms. They are working in very dangerous situations. I know it’s frustrating and people are short tempered and it’s perfectly understandable give
If you don’t want to do this for yourself, then do it for them.
When my Mom was in her final days, it fell to me to deal with her care. I read her “living will” about not wanting to be kept alive unnaturally, with no hope of recovery. Those are my documented wishes for myself, too, but it was much easier to read it with her signature, and then to tell the doctor to let her go.
My Mom used to make up an elaborate costume for herself and go trick-or-treating in her retirement community. Nobody had candy, so they invited her in for cocktails.
Not even one “Trick or Treater” for us last night as the event had been rescheduled for this coming Saturday because of the anticipated storm. Both communities rescheduled. I say both, because my side of the street is in one township and across the street is a different borough. We used to get anywhere from 250 to 300 kids, but over the last couple of years it has gone down to around 150. Halloween was always one of my favorite holidays and still is. The wife and I enjoy seeing the little ones in their costumes. Some very imaginative Mothers out there. We don’t mind the older kids either. They are almost always polite and are simply having a good time. The number of outside decorations seems to be less this year too.
I recently picked up a Proto 1000 Budd RDC. I am a little disappointed in its performance. I only have a 4’x4’ test oval at this time. One corner is a little warped, not terribly so, but enough that there is a small grade coming off the corner. The Budd comes to a complete stop as soon as it hits that little grade. A little nudge gets it going but it will stop there every time. I was wondering if any of you have one of these and how your’s performs. I do need to check to make sure that the trucks are free and not binding.
I have to take the car to the dealer tomorrow for an oil change and tire rotation. Then I think we will stop at the Mall so the wife and I can get some exercise. We both need to walk and with her limited vision, that’s the safest place. Plus there are plenty of places to sit down if her ankle starts to bother her. Then I get to watch the shoppers. A very pleasant pasttime indeed.
Everyone stay safe and best wishes for those disrupted by Sandy. Tom
Joe-Geeah??? Now Brad, nothing down there ever runs ahead of schedule! Tastefully late, yes, but never, ever ahead of schedule. Why they done gots laws against it ya know…[:-^] OK, so we’re stuck in Georgia for November I guess. I drove through there a couple times on my way to Flowidah to visit family but THAT is about all. Sure hope there is something to see RR oriented around here… [swg][(-D]
Mornin’ everyone! A happy All Saints Day to you, or All Hallows if if you like, and even Samhain for the Pagans out there, the first day of Winter in the ancient world. Traditionally, the solstice was mid winter hence carols like, “In the deep mid-winter…”
Zoe, I’ll have a bowl of granola cereal a couple chocolate chip cookies and lots of dark roast coffee to wash it all down with.
Dark and gloomy outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning. Currently at the high for the day, 45°F. I shall be relighting the wood stove soon.
Galaxy, good advise to all of us. I will be seeing my lawyer soon to write a new will, the old one being about 30 years old now, and should check to make sure my sons names are among those who can access my medical records in an emergency.
Hope to spend some quality time in the Layout rooms today. I have a lot of items to finish.
[:(!]Just spent the last 2 years going through the same things and yes, it’s a royal pain to keep the health care providers up to date on all the combinations and permutations of who can do/decide on what [:^)] However, they do have to CYA because of all the privacy, legal issues out there[:(!] now days.
For instance…I recently received a check in the mail made out to my mothers Estate. House insurance rebate of just over $100. Now I am her executor and only child but the because the check came way late, and is made out to to the estate of…and the Estate account at the bank has been closed, I can’t cash the check.
The insurance company will not issue the check in my name even though they have copies of the wills probate.
Round and round it goes… Grrrrrr. I suppose in 6 months I’ll get a letter asking me why the check has’nt been cashed…
