Hi all, just a heads up on an upsetting email I received. While the Title and link claimed to be of a specific locomotive, and the sender signed it as a member of trains.com, the link instead sent me to a website which is intended to catch and get the information on child pornographers. If any of you receive an email claiming to be a member of Trains.com, who you do not know, do not click any links, since the last thing you want to be right now is dragged off to jail.
Huh?
Sounds to me like a couple of your friends are running a game on you!
Not necessarily. If you ever take a look at what your isp’s spam filtering catches you’ll see all kinds of junque from fake Rolexes to porn with email stylings alluding to things like trains, music, whatever web pages one visits. Not much one can do about it with the sophistication of web bots running around harvesting email addresses.
What forum E-mails???!!![:(!][xx(][:(][V][censored][banghead][soapbox][|(][sigh]
(hint, hint…)
It wasn’t directly from the forum, it was from someone who claimed to be part.
Prank-playing friends, spammers or whatever, thanks for alerting us. You might want to e-mail Bergie directly to let him know, including a copy of the original e-mail.
People that pull this sort of thing really need to get a hobby.
Amen to that!
[#ditto] Yeah, What He Said.
I guess that I don’t have to worry about this one, I haven’t been getting any thread new post email notifications, or other automatic forum emails for quite awhile now.
Doug
I don’t think it was an automated Email…I think it was from someone’s private server (e.g. bob@aol.com) who signed it as a member of the forum (e.g. regards, bob, member of Trains.com forums) or something like that.
I can’t see how this can happen, members’ e-mail addresses are not shown on the forum. If you send a PM to someone else, it comes from the forum address. The only way to get a members’ address is by them replying to you through the forum software and you including your e-mail address. Or if you have a website with your address on it.
Not quite Mr. B. 6 of the 8 poster to this thread have thier fly down.
Any registered user (or repeat offender…) can acces your profile and get your real name and Email address (public Email) , because you put it their Alex.
Never click on any link provided by someone you don’t know. Activate the " status bar ". Do a left click anywhere on the tool bar at top of your browser. The status bar will show up at bottom left of browser window. Look here to see were you are going before you click on any link.
Supposedly it’s being worked on (lack of email notifications). From what was posted here, not everyone is affected. It would be interesting to see if anyone IS getting notifications that has it set in their profile; so far we’ve just heard from those that don’t.
Also watch if your on that Yahoo HO Yard sale forum. (you get E-mails of train stuff people have for sale) My antivirus has picked up 3 messages that a virus embedded from them in the last 2 weeks.
…the link instead sent me to a website which is intended to catch and get the information on child pornographers.
I don’t understand what you’re saying. Is it a child porn site? What is a site “intended to catch…information…on child pornographers (the people who create child porn )”? Is it a special child porn site that asks for your full info so it can be turned over to law enforcement?
And for that matter you wrote, “since the last thing you want to be right now is dragged off to jail.” When do I want to be dragged off to jail?
In other words, what the heck are you talking about?
The link sends you to a website, that claims to get the information of child pornographers. When I looked at the link it redirected it to me too, “kidporn” was in the address bar, and on the page it says “you’ve been caught, we’ve recorded all your information.”
I don’t know if that’s a hoax or not, but I just wanted to give people the heads up, not be torn apart on my credibilty on the forum…

I have done Goggle and Yahoo searches and sometimes a posting from Trains.com shows up in the results. I do a lot of searching for model railroad ideas.
IF someone put their “email address in the body of the message,” you will see it in the search results. I have seen this before. Some people have done this because the PM service of Trains.com is not working very well so they wanted to be contacted “Off the list”.

Not what I was doing. I just could not understand what you were saying.
They can probably search your computer for photos of girl’s cabooses
I don’t open or read emails from someone I don’t know, and the subject line doesn’t add up.
If they are not in my address book, or I haven’t sent them an email asking for information, forget it, I don’t need it, so I don’t even open it.

Caught by whom? What information? Yep that has the earmarks of a hoax. Don’t lose sleep over it.
