Embattled Apache Railway gets breathing room

Waffle much, McCain?

They should introduce an excursion service. They can just get a few coaches, modify a flatcar or two, and for power, the Alcos would work fine. But to make it a big draw, perhaps they can buy a steam locomotive. We all know Yreka Western 19 is up for sale, so why not give it a new home?

Been there-done that with the steam train…the APA originally went as far south as McNary and the steam train went East from McNary to Maverick on the Fort Apache Reservation. This all ended in the mid 70s when the sawmill at McNary burned down and the Apaches kicked the railroad off its tribal land. The current line runs through rolling high desert with little vegetation-hardly a tourist site.

A US map of government owned rail lines. A good way to save on taxes.

What’s the current operating status of Engine #82, former Tennessee Central #400, last operating TC engine from the '68 closure?
