EMD GP40 Diesel. N gauge

i have the above engine i bought from a train fair, Can i run it on DCC ?? thanks Andy I forgot too ask…lol

That would depend on whether it has a DCC decoder fitted or not. If not, you’ll need to add one. Does your DCC system allow you to run a loco without a decoder as address 0? If so, try putting it on the track, if you hear a high-pitched whine or buzz it has no decoder (and you shouldn’t leave it standing on the track for any length of time).

Fitting a decoder in N is not something I’ve tried, I know it’s possible to buy new frames with space milled for a decoder to convert some types, but it sounds like quite an involved process. It would help to know what brand the loco at this point. Hope this is of use!

i think i did not word my question right, The engine is a Bachmann model and my question should have been ! Can i convert this engine too DCC . I dont have DCC yet but would like too start a layout with DCC and was hoping that i did not waist my money on an engine that i Cannot convert too DCC as and when the time comes. I hope this helps and does not confuse anymore.

Theoretically there’s no reason for you not being able to convert it to DCC later on - What I don’t know is how much space there is for a decoder or whether anyone makes replacement frames for these. The newest N scale decoders are about the size of your thumbnail but space can still be a problem.

For the price, you may find it cheaper to buy a Atlas Gp40 in the future. Depending on roadname, you may find specials at dealers for older models.
Standard MSRP: $99.95
Decoder Equipped MSRP: $129.95
Decoder equipped GP40’s sell for $90.95 at 4Nscale.
