Is there an ongoing project or plans to preserve or restore the EMD Model 40 switcher at the Cushing Stone Quarry in Amsterdam, NY?

I’m curious - what is the intense fascination with this particular engine? There are a bunch of model 40s preserved, yet everyone wants this one… I don’t get it.

There were only eleven produced and only eight still exist. Even though I am a huge Alco fan I hate to see any classic locomotive scrapped. Especially one this rare. I wanted to see if anything was in the works to save this one before it is too late.

Rare? 8/11 still exist. That is more than half of the roster for an engine that was pretty much an oddball. How many GE dash-7s are preserved? U-boats? Exactly. I know we have two model 40s within spitting distance of where I live - one at a tourist railroad and one in a ‘technology’ museum. So even if this one fell to the scrappers, I wouldn’t lose a bit of sleep over it.

I think in one of the discussion boards I read, the owners do have some sort of plans or dispostion for it and were getting tired of railfans bugging them to ask if they could “save” the engine.

Is the tourist railroad you are talking about the Black River and Western? They have one.

I was thinking of the Walkersville Southern.

Travel Town museum in L.A. has a Model 40.For a short while it was in service giving short rides on a caboose train.
