EMD releases Norfolk Southern Heritage SD70ACe painted for Penn Central

The paint job that’s best left forgotten. Perhaps it can serve as a warning.

I hope NS plans to keep these locomotives in the current schemes for some time.

Who would have thought anyone would ever get nostalgic about Penn Central?!

I am pleased NS is doing the heritage paint schemes and the PC unit looks great with the frame stripe but this was not part of the PC paint scheme. Maybe they should leave it anyway. Also, I hope NS adds Erie Lackawanna to the heritage program.

Oughta make the old heads at work squirm.

Dunno why, but NYC’s basic black looked elegant and PC’s, and NS’s black just looks drab.

Time for CSX to emulate NS and UP. Some of the units would look cool in SAL (not the silver!) and ACL livery. I’ll talk to Warren about BNSF units. Wish me luck!

@ Robert Smalarz is right that the frame stripe on NS’s PC heritage unit wasn’t part of the original paint scheme. (See Trains online Then & Now gallery.) Maybe it was added to comply with current safety requirements calling for reflective paint. More great paint shop work here, and historic, sure, but a livery and logo only a prosperous step-son could love. They say it’s always darkest before the dawn.

We can only hope that NS execs see the PC unit beside the NS units and FINALLY realize just how blah the Throroughbred scheme is.

Had PC made it through reorganization, we might very well have seen a true PC SD70ACe. It will be a bit difficult to recognize, in the army of black and some white NS units, but PC is part of NS’ history and deserves to have a unit in the heritage fleet.

How about lining up these 4 “Heritage” Units for a shot: Pennsylvania, New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail?

Love the Penn Central unit! The only thing I would have liked to see better is the red and white “PC” logo.

Mr. Kaposztas, next week they will line up all ten of the Conrail family units. They will also do the five Southern family units, and the five N&W family units, as well as all 20.
