EMD SD45T-2

Just got a new Athearn Genesis EMD SD45T-2 with SP “speed lettering” from Trainworld in the mail yesterday…what a beautiful locomotive!..all i’m going to have to do is install a red lens in the nose, MU hoses, a bit of weathering, and it will be ready to go…Chuck

Pics? [:)]

This model is really close to the Genesis series overall and is a good model for the price. I look forward to more products like this from Athearn.

And like the Genesis series, it is missing the Mu hoses and basic details on each end.
Does it have Cut Bars for the couplers???

no cut bars…(I have some small wire that i use to bend them into a prototype shape and mount it on the loco)…Athearn still doesn’t do the bars, MU hoses, some locos…no windshield wipers, and their snowplows aren’t very prototype either…I’ll probably just remove the stock snowplow and replace it with one from details west …they don’t make slots for the MU hoses to fit thru and trying to cut them out with a dremel tool bit is sort of ackward and makes a lot of tool marks …chuck

Agreed the loco out of the box is very nice!

However, the pilot ends need work.

The snowplow they give is complete junk and needs to be replaced. You need to add cut levers, mu hoses, and a proper plow. But that’s about it! The rest of the detail is pretty nice!

My only real complaint is they could have designed the rear power truck to have the gear tower over the front wheelset instead of the middle wheelset. Then the seethru screens in the rear would have been clear, as on the prototype.

Very attractive locomotive. Got to see a few at my LHS.

CW, have you considered installing sound? With those “See Thru” grills, it should really be able to ring out clearly, even at a very low volume.

Just a thought!

I wonder if Details West is considering putting together an “SP SD45T-2 detail package” like they have for some other models like the C44-9W?

Or was it Detail Associates?

Anyway, seems like it would be a good idea.

I just read the review of this loco in MR and it said that they are making a detail package for it. I plan on getting one.

See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SD45T-2/ for an online detailing clinic. [8D]

That’s exactly what I thought when I first saw it.

Just received my tunnel motors today in B&LE paint. I must say, this is quite an impressive model. Excellent paint job, details are fine too. This engine runs as well as a Kato. I’ve never had an Athearn craw the way these do. WOW! The wait for this paint scheme was well worth it. Very nice.
5 minute job to throw in a decoder too. My hat off to Athearn for a fine job. I dont spend alot of time counting rivits but in my eyes, this one is dead on. Athearn has added quite a bit of weight to this engine and I fully expect it to drag anything.
