EMD SD70ACE. Comments and Opinions.

Hi Crew,

I’m assuming that Athearn or some of the other manufacturers are going to be cranking out these models if they haven’t already.

I was curious: How many of you would get an ACE model? What road name?

I recently saw photos of CSX 4840 on www.railpictures.net

I looked at it for a while. At first I thought that with the raised nose and the GE styled windshields it looked quite strange and rather cold, poetically. But then with those flared radiators, it grew on me though I’m sure going to miss those “FP45 Styled” windshields that the other EMD safety cabs came with. I’m assuming that the smaller windshields cuts costs.

That cab profile does make it look like a “rugged looking brute”. I’ve read where posters on other Forums called it ugly but after seeing the old “Spartan Cabs” on EMDs for many years the modern safety cabs and this new styled cab, to me, look pretty decent.

I like it, but since my modeling period is the 60s and early 70s I won’t be getting one, but sure would love to see one or more run on a club layout.

The cab looks like it’s rather simple to build. No rounded corners or compound angles. I don’t think I’ll get a model of one unless Norfolk Southern does (besides, I’ve been more intrested in steam lately). NS haven’t been intrested in AC locomotives. Knowing NS, if EMD offers that model with a “Spartan” cab and DC traction they probably would, but now they seem to prefer GE units. I wonder what NS will do to meet the new emission standards.

NS will buy the ES44DC, aka “GEVO”, GEs next generation emission standard meetin’ direct competitor to the SD70ACe. At least, that’s there DC alternative. BNSF is already buying 'em.

Kinda strange that the GEVO will sell in large numbers, at least initially - considering it has a completely new powerplant. The 70ACE uses the proven 710 series. Although the completely exposed piping and wiring makes it rather goofy look, even if it is easier for servicing.

Even though there’s really no external difference, I like the SD70M-2 better than the SD70ACe.

i believe UP has ordered a ton of each for the first half of the year

115 SD70ACe’s in the 8100+ road # range
200 AC45CTE’s in the 5400+ road # range i believe

Yep, that "cowl nose cab and winshield styling is hard to beat!
