I was surprised that when they JUST BARELY dodged into a siding to avoid that head on collision, that the oncoming train didn’t derail flying across the switch set the wrong way. HOLLYWOOD!!

The switch WAS thrown… by John Wayne…he just can’t be seen. The Duke

That’s exactly right, it was. And the train wouldn’t derail going through a trailing point switch. It just moves the points over and breaks the throwing mechanism. You may be surprised to know that there are switches designed to do just this same thing and not break the mechanism. This is in addition to spring switches.
