What is the prototypical EOT marking when the train is being pushed in current operation? Does the last locomotive pushing have lights on, or do they mount the FRED in the coupler of the last loco? I know, probably a nit, but it ties into DCC operation on the model.

Headlight on low.
Lights on dim although I seen locals with locomotives at both ends with the trailing unit headlights on bright…I suspect with the human error factor a pusher could have its lights on bright just as easily.
Keep in mind the FRED/EOTD was created to replace having a caboose at the rear of the train, since boxcars, flatcars etc. don’t have their own lights or a place to hang marker lights generally like a caboose did. Since diesels have lights they really don’t need to have a FRED when operating at the end of the train. I often see BNSF coal or all-rail taconite trains with two engines up front and one in the rear, I’ve never seen the rear pusher have a FRED or other device.
