In line with my previous post about 2-4-2 and 4-4-2 etal, do you have an opinion about the hauling power of the Lionel NYC Flyer engine in set number 6-30016 (8635)? Thanks.
traindaddy,
I have the O-27 version of the NYC Flyer set, the 4-4-2 that comes with this set isn’t a great puller, but it is a nice little starter engine. Mine doesn’t have Railsounds (they are in the tender), but the engines are identical.
I don’t run this set any longer as I have other engines and rolling stock that I use, therefore I don’t have a need for it any longer, and the transformer was very weak back then…

Brent: One of the great things about this forum is the exchange of information. Your comments about the NYC Flyer engine echo what I have heard from another source. Thank you.
I have that set and my locomotive is a great puller and smoker. It doesn’t run hot either. Being realistic, a 10-12 car consist is not going to be a problem for that engine. I’ve run as many as 18 cars behind ours on a windy layout, but that’s not the norm.
The Lionel NYC Flyer 4-4-2 is a very good starter type TOY train. And the set is a great value.

Jim,
Not saying it won’t pull a long train… I’ve never put more than 10 cars behind mine… I’ve never gotten mine to pull more than 4 or 5 cars up a 5% grade (which is what the trestle sets are designed to mimic).
As we agree it is a great starter toy engine and can provide lots of entertaining moments.

Jim: If you read the post I left for Brent, I can honestly say that I have ALSO heard the same comment that you have made. Now, as they say: “The decision is mine” Many thanks.
PS. Guys…Good points…Love the exchange!!! [:)]
As is said many times, you get what you pay for. That having been said, the loco is a pretty good puller as long as you stick to semi-scale, light cars. It looks out of place with scale cars anyway. The one area that it has a problem with is lighted semi-scale passenger cars which are fairly heavy. Any more than one or two cars and it will sit there and just spin its wheels. I actually think that magnetraction would be better for this loco than tires. I will say that if you have children operating trains on your layout, this is a good loco for them to use.
