Does any body know what the list prices are for Diesel Engines from GE, EMD any anybody else? I was watching a discovery channel special on the Canandian Pacific Railway where the show spotlighted the AC4400. The figure that was thrown out was $2 million for an AC4400. Boeing for a while listed the prices of airliners on their website (actual prices are steep discounts from published figures). I was wondering how much capitol the engines are worth…
Thanks
Class 66 (or JT42CW, if you prefer), approximately, $3 million. You pay a lot extra for the models with lower production runs.
Don’t the Class Is use long term leases to “rent” their locomoive rather than make a purchase. Also, how many locomotive deals include maintance in the package?
Yes, this is true, leasing on a power by the hour basis is the preferred way to finance the terribly expensive new power being built these days. The savings come from unit reduction and lower fuel consumption. Fuel is going up in price so fast that that factor is not applicable at this time. And most of the leases do include routine maintenance. So, when they turn up in a railroad’s shop, the personnel that work on a unit that is covered by such a lease will use a special charge code on their time slips. They may also be sent to a contract repair facility, much to the anger of shop people!
