Hi Guys,
I just noticed in the Walther’s flyer that I got in the mail the other day that Life-Like is producing a new release of the HO DL109 in various roads, including the New Haven in the Green/Orange paint scheme. The previous release included the New Haven DL109 in the Green/Gold scheme. I’m anxious to get the new paint scheme but noticed that there are 2 road numbers…702 and 709. Interestingly, the Green/Gold scheme included engine number 709. I wonder if anyone can tell me why Life-Like is using the same number 709? Is it possible that the New Haven took engines originally painted in the green/gold scheme and then painted them green/orange but kept the same number?
If so, if I buy the new green/orange scheme in road number 709, I’ll have to be sure to not have it on the layout at the same time as the green/gold one numbered 709 because technically, they are the same engine, right?
I wouldn’t want to get shot by the prototype police.
Hey Mondo,first phase # were1941-42, 0700-0709 ,1942-43, 0710-0719,1944, 0720-0737,1945 0738-0759, hope this helps with #'s as for the scheme ask Dave Telesha.
Of course they kept the same numbers! 0709 in 1941 was 0709 in 1959 when the DL’s were retired.
A change of paint scheme NEVER meant a change of numbers. BTW LL is doing correctly, 0708 and 0709.
0708 and 0709 are the only DER-1a (0700-0709) units correct for this scheme.
The LL model only represents the first 10 (class DER-1a, 1941) with the mass of roof vents.
They were delivered in 1941 in the Green/Gold scheme and were repainted circa 1948 in that Warm Orange/Hunter Green “experimental” scheme which lasted on some units as little as 1 year and on some into the early 1950’s - -until they were repainted back to Pullman Green and Gold or 401 Green and Imitation gold depending on the year.
Other DL-109’s did wear this scheme and many other schemes. However the LL model is only correct for the first 10 (0700-0709).
I forgot to mention I find myself in the same place as you…
I have 0709 from the Pullman Green/Gold run… I’ll just be getting 0708 because I model the early 1950’s (1951-52ish) - both schemes were around together along with several others. The 1940’s saw a few attempts at pinstriped schemes.
TO expound, this Warm Orange/Hunter Green, gray-pinstriped, cab unit scheme was only applied to delivery FA/B-1’s, a few DL-109’s, and the first 10 PA-1’s (delivery).
It was experimental and didn’t last. The PA-1 order was completed with the last 17 units being delivered in Pullman Green and Gold. FA-1’s were soon repainted PG/G and were the 109’s - although as I said, a few units in the WO/HG could be seen as late as 1953 or so.
Hi Dave,
Thank you so much for your informed response to my posting. I am modeling the New Haven circa 1959 so from what you’re saying, I really shouldn’t even have a DL-109 in the green/orange scheme because they were repainted by that year back to green/gold.
