which engine do you think is best on pulling trains up on grades.
A retired UP engineer friend once told me that a 3000 HP GE would pull more up Cajon pass than an SD 40 WHEN IT’S WORKING!(emphasis his).
SD70MAC - BNSF’s classic coal hauler. Probably one of the best proven pullers out there. It has the wieght… self steering trucks… and AC motors. Although the CP used/uses alot of SD90MAC’s up in the Kicking hourse area… I just know they are all crap when they get down here.
From what I hear, UP 3985 hauled 135 double-stacks up Sherman Hill singlehandedly. You can’t beat steam!
Why the hell does it matter? Sorry but these quesitons seem pointless to me.
Ya so that comment really isnt necessary. Especially coming from someone who doesn’t start too many threads (not saying that i do) As you grow up you will understand that sometimes it is nice to sit back and discuss things. I would rather talk about engine performance, instead of the cool paint shceme or somthing like that. But still i would never discurage discussion on the topic. You should be open to all discussion, not just what you think is “worth you time,” don’t look at the topic if you dont want to see it. Simple as that.
A couple of NOT DERATED, 20 CYLENDAR SD45s would pull a house out of its foundation
If this question was so pointless then why did you post?[:(!]
Yea but you would hope that the SD45’s would have some type of engine malfunction… they are netorious for them.
Uh, people, if you want a forum fire, go over to the trains forum where we have some heated opinions being various degrees of respected. Let’s act a little more civil over here [:)].
Sincerely,
Daniel Parks
THIS IS A DIFFERENT QUESTION ON WHAT ENGINES CAN SLUG UP THE GRADES BETTER NOT SOME HEATED CONSERVATION SO NJMIKE KEEP BAD COMMENTS TO YOUR SELF PLEASE.[:(!][:(!]
DO YALL THINK 6 NON DERATED AC6000CW’S COULD MAKE IT UP A 4.5 % GRADE WITH 160 LOADED COAL CARS WITH POWER EQUALY DISTRUBTED ALONG THE TRAIN.
Probably a couple of Baldwin RF-16’s. They were well known for their lugging power.
I would say a SD-90 MAC
I bet so!!! AC6000s are beasts[}:)]
AC6000CW, don’t listen to that njmike, I like this discussion
i know 1 railroad company that they bought i tihink 16 ac6000cw’s and they re located in australia bhp railroad company. they haul iron ore from the interitor to the ports of australia. and they never derated the locomotives.
here in florida the main csx line the highest grade is .9 % and the max speed is 70 mph.
i think 3 m420w could pull a 110 car train with ease to yall think.
