I buy my expensive engines etheir at my LHS or a Train show. what about you???[:)] Tim
Most of mine came from Ebay.
I think it is important to support LHS because we need them for informations, for the possibility of comparing and trying our locos before bringing them home, for the responsibility about what could be broken or damaged during transportation. Selling us good stuff is their job and if we don’t want everyone of us having its job transfered to internet based companies, we have to support them.

I have four locomotives now: (1) ebay, (1) Trainworld, (1) Empire Northern, and (1) LHS purchase. With that said, I still give my LHS 90% of my business. I ONLY purchase rolling stock through my LHS. That way I can check BLT dates to be sure they fit in my era or not.
Tom
eBay, though most that were acquired before eBay came from LHS.
I don’t buy expensive locomotives. If they aren’t a great deal I don’t buy them.
My 18 locos:
12 LHS
1 on a trip to Rochelle ($50 kato SD40-2!)
7 from a private dealer at my MRR club
Matthew
My most expensive was a 2-6-6-2 and bought via internet co., all the rest were bought at LHS’s. I try to buy at LHS’s whenever I can.
My most expensive engines usually come from one of my LHSs. They usually will give you a decent discount if you are a regular customer.
I have gotten some from private individuals, either friends, or people I meet at LHSs or shows.
I have bought several from train shows, the prices there can be pretty good if you shop around. Or wait around until the end of the show, and save them the effort of carrying the engines back out.
Most of my buying is at train shows. My LHS doesn’t carry S scale. My last 5 locomotives were bought at train shows.
Enjoy

I voted the internet, but actually misinterpreted the question. I should have voted LHS because that’s where I got my most expensive loco…and boy did I pay!
Never again.
Really? Try finding much to in On30 to try out OR compare. All the LHS’s around here ask what On30 is when I ask about it.
I like to support my LHS. Even though there are may better internet and ebay buys, I don’t mind spending the additional $$. If I have a problem of flat out don’t like the engine it can always be easily returned. Without our support all the LHS would not survive. Want to have to buy everything online? I don’t think so.

One LHS sometimes has locos on sale at a pretty heafty discount. This is the only time I buy expensive locos.
I buy about 50% from LHS and The other 50% comes from ebay!
I used to get most from eBay but I have gotten the last several from my LHS. He’ll make me a good deal and he is a good guy.
Hmmm… Must be the “new math”.[:D]
I don’t have a “local” hobby shop, so almost all purchases are internet or Ebay.
I have bought most of mine from 4 local hobby shops.
