Engine problem

I’m starting my first layout and have got it wired for DC operation. I have two engines and one works, but rather choppy (I have some electrical problems to work out!), but it works. The new engine I tried ( a Life-Like SW9 N-scale ) worked for about 30 seconds then stopped working. The front headlight still lights up but there is no movement! Any suggestions to help fix this? I haven’t taken it apart because I can’t figure out how to disconnect the body from the chassis! Please don’t confuse me too much, I’m a noob!

If the headlight works that means its getting power. That’s good.
Could be a loose wire to the motor. A bad contact on the motor (between the motor and the frame). A broken wire or contact strip on a bus bar (if it has one). A jammed armature in the motor. The gears in the trucks are jammed.

Bad news is you are going to have to get at the motor to resolve it.

I am in HO so can’t help you getting into the shell.

You say it is a new one so take it back where you got it and have them look at it. I would not attempt to take it apart if it is still under warantee.

Blind Bruce has sound advice, of course you could take along a medium to large sized ball peen hammer to adjust any vendor attitude problems!

Taking it back to the seller is very good advise.

Taking a hammer is probably NOT good advise.

I always take my friend Dave. 6’5, 285 lbs, tattoos everywhere! NOBODY says ‘NO’ to Dave!! LOL

Darrell, threateningly quiet…for now
