Hey,
I have an Atlas sd35 in N scale and the past couple of days it has been making this sort of squeaking\clicking noise. any thoughts on what it might be?
Thanks in advance,
Andrew

not in n scale but have you taken the shell off and inspected the gears? maybe a bit of ballast or other crud on the gears.i assume it has flywheels,is one of them loose on the motor shaft? you did oil it sparingly didn’t you? wheels all in gauge i assume.perhaps someone else in n can help you.good luck.terry…
Squeeking noises usually mean you need to lube the gears, although it may be something else causing the noise, I also model in N and there are plenty of parts people over look when lubing the engine, out of the box engines usually are lubed but constant running wears most of it away, try checking the drive couplings along with the gears, I use Labelle light oil and Labelle grease when I do lube up my engines, but don’t over do it a little goes a long way. Hope this helps…

I used some regular house oil and that didn’t help. does it have to be the labelle brand?
Thanks again,
Andrew
Any lube you use MUST be plastic compatible. If it is not, over time, your
gears will begin to deteriorate and eventually your locomotive will cease
to run. Labelle happens to be a manufacturer that makes both plastic
compatible and non-compatible lubrication products and markets them
strongly to the model railroad population. They are good products.
I used 3-in-1 oil brand. It doesn’t say any thing about plastic on the bottle.
Like GN-Rick said it must be compatible to plastic, I don’t think 3 in 1 is even if it doen’t say so on the bottle, some oils will deteriorate any plastic it touches, I would try to clean as much of it off as possible , and start again with any plastic compatible oil, I mentioned LaBelle because I have used it for many years and its highly promoted for the model railroad hobby. Good luck

3in one oil is petroleum based and it can damage plastics i would clean it off and get some labbelle.
