My N scale Atlas Mogul goes up a small grade on my layout just fine, but going down backwards it stops requiring a little push at the same spot. Any suggestions? Thanks!
How steep is your “small grade”? It sounds like you have a spot on the tracks that you are either losing power through a bad connection or because the track is dirty. First, clean the tracks well. Second, try another locomotive and see if you have the same problem. If the second locomotive works, you’ve now isolated it to a contact problem in the first locomotive. It’s possible that your downgrade may be steep enough to cause a netal part on the truck to contact the frame and cause a short. You will have to use a process of elimination to find the cause.
