Entry level craftsman kit

I’m really impressed with the look of many of the craftsman kits I’ve seen posted in MR and other sources lately. I’d like to try building one myself, but never have done so. I model in N scale, 1954 as my time period. Is there a small kit anyone can recommend as a good one to start with? Perhaps something that would fit in a small New England town (I model a B&M branch line in the woods of New Hampshire). I am currently scoping out structures to fill a small downtown area in a corner of my layout so this would be an ideal spot. Jason

“Relatively simple (i.e. for beginners)” and “New England downtown” aren’t two phrases that go together all that easily when it comes to the better craftsman wood kits.

Even so, some that come to mind are Branchline’s Majestic Theater (a smalltown frame moviehouse), or Blair Line’s Fred & Red’s Cafe (a small, hole-on-the-wall eatery), plus the host of small gas stations that are on the market today. Also, consider Bar Mills’ Earl’s Oil, although it would probably be most appropriate situated more toward the edge of town.
