EOTD on DPU's.

I was watching my Train Video on a DVD and saw alot of Coal Loads and Empty’s with DPU having an EOTD attached to the Coupler of the DPU. Question. If the DPU already has Radio contact with the Lead Locomotive then what is the use for the EOTD then? Thanks,Allan.

As a marker light, not for the train in question, but for everyone else. However…

When I see DP units, they usually don’t have EOTs–just the light of the locomotive, set dim, to illuminate the hind end.

Once in a while when they add the DPU, they don’t remove the EOT. It just rides along on the coupler between the last car and the DPU.

On BNSF we interchange coal with other railroads that the crews are not dp qualified at the mines they hang a etd so after the power is unlinked the crew or carman hangs, and arms & tests the etd then we are on our way, but if the interchange railroad is dp qualified the rear dp motor with light on dim flags the rear of the train.

So the DPU is shut down if the receiving railroad is not qualified, and it just acts as another car?

So the rear DPU is Isolated.

I forgot to state in my above post after unlinking either hostlers or the outbound crew will run the rear motor to the front.
