Eraser fun part deux (dial up beware)

Only this time no eraser was used. My victim this time is an Athearn BN 50’ boxcar. I shaved off the stirrups (2 were already broken off) and the grab irons on the sides. I bent .020 wire for the stirrups and used .015 wire for the grabs. The first step I used for the weathering was to use a wash of white pastel chalk in water and a splash of rubbing alky. After that dried, I took a stiff bristle bru***o smooth it all out. I then applied a very light coat of Dullcote. After that dried I mixed up some acrylic artist paints and painted on the rust. I still need to do the trucks, but other than that, I think it looks pretty OK. The pictures seem to show off the rust too much (especially on the top), but in person it looks real nice, especially using the 3 foot rule. I finished it off by applying black pastel chalk to the ends only.

Let me know what you think.

Glenn

Very, very nice!

Thanks Ray!

Hey, I see your from close to my chilhood home, Watkins Glen. I loved it there, great place to grow up. I try to get up there every year or so to visit family. It’s too cold for my blood in the winter [:)] so I come up in the summer…

Glenn

Nice job![:D]

Thanks Darth!

Read your post on eraser fun ,just had to try it . I have the same box car, but after 4 penciles
shot, I got to thinkin, I tried tooth paste and used the eraser as a rubbing tool, tooth paste
did the rest . Also seemed to work faster than just the eraser. And my cars are minty fresh.

Interesting use of toothpaste, I would have never thought of that. Bet it’s kinda messy though [:)] At any rate, at least you tried the eraser method. When are ya going to post up a pic?

Glenn

For two cars, you’ve really come a long way. The roof isn’t all that great, though. The rust is fine, but the “alumnium” is way too shiny. Have you ever tried Dullcote?

Matt

The weathering looks really great. I look forward to you buying some lumber so we can make a whole layout look just as good.

Thanks Matt. Like I mentioned in my original post, the pics don’t really do the car justice, especially on the roof. I was using direct light like 6" above it. I dont have the equipment to bounce light off of a white board to give it that nice glow. Believe it or not, the roof got a layer of Dullcote before the rust layer. Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it.

Glenn

p.s. I have another car in the cooker, I need to get some paint first. It is another Athearn car, this time it was a Milwaukee Road boxcar that I have stripped of paint. I’m going to paint it in NS colors ( I actually found a prototype to copy ), but it won’t be truely prototypical, the roof is wrong, as is the door, but nobody but me and you know that.

Very very nice indeed! Nice work.

Nice job. Can you imagine how much better it would look with weathered sprung trucks. [;)]

Thanks guys! I actually did the trucks this evening, and it really sets it off. I’ll post pics tomorrow eve sometime.

Glenn

Great job on the car!
Chris

You have done a great job weathering that car…and the detail is great tooo!

As promised, grungy trucks! I need better lighting.
