Can anyone help me match the Erie Colors (as found on diesels, and I think some stations). From what I can see from photos, they appear to be two different shades of green, plus a yellow.
First, to clarify,if you are referring to Erie’s Passenger units, yes they were dark Green and"cream" , seperated by yellow striping. They had yellow “wings” on the nose, with an Erie diamond herald in yellow, front and center. This scheme was designed by the GM styling group for Erie’s E8’s, delivered in 1951. There are two units in this scheme at this time. They are owned by the United Railroad Museum of New Jersey, but are of NYC and PRR origin. The status of Ex-Conrail 4022/EL/Erie 833 is not clear to me at this time, other than it is owned by Bennett Levin, who owns a pair of ex-PRR E8s (Conrail 4020,4021) as well. Erie also painted their PAs in this scheme as they needed repainting during the '50s. All other Erie road units were black, with varying treatments of yellow trim/striping. All of these units had the “wings” with the Erie diamond herald front and center. Erie switchers were black, with yellow ends after the second world war. The Diamond herald was on the side of the hood, roughly three feet from the front of the unit. I do not recall seeing any EL structures in these colors, at least in around my haunts when EL was still around. They went to painting structures a bright red starting in the later 60s, however. Check a copy of “Erie Railroad in color” by David R.Sweetland (Morning Sun Books)for some nice views of the Erie’s colors.[8D]
