Error in the new Walther's Catalogue???

On their photo contest, the first place pic and the discription do not seen to go together; no filled cars, no lower track, no trestle bridge, no reference to the great crowd by the mill. I wondered if the pic or the discription were correct, of if I just did not read it correctly.

Ah, Yes!!! The screw-up fairy is alive and well and living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!!

If you compare the caption accompanying the photo on the bottom of page 628 - the one which raises your question - and the caption accompanying the photo on page 646 you will discover that they are identical. All of the components of the caption on both pages are present in the photo on page 646. If the caption is correct then it seems to me that it belongs with the photo on page 646 which leaves the photo on page 628 without a caption. I would vote for the photo on page 628 as the first place photo but then your guess would be as good as mine in that regard.

Looks like SOMEBODY forgot to take thier anti-f***-up pills that day.

Well, this certainly is not the first mistake that has been made in a Walthers catalog. When you are preparing a publication the size of their HO catalog, it’s easy to make mistakes, especially if you’re working under pressure to meet a publication deadline.

I shudder to think what their catalog would look like if it was edited and proofread by the people who work at our local “Award-Winning” newspaper.

right you are. I agree that they got the right pic with the wrong caption. I wonder who the winner really is.

As an editor of Law Journals, I can tell you errors can be easy to miss. Do you remember that it was suggested that you have someone else read, say, your resume? When one is working on such things, one becomes “too close” and misses the error, while a casual reader notices right away. I am amazed at the number of typos and gross spelling errors of those who type on the net, but they must be disregarded![:)][:I]

Not me. I never make misteaks.

Maybee thats why its only $10!

So. . . How come you can sympathize with working under a 365-day-long deadline, but not one 24 hours long?

KL

no matter what publication it is, it at some point has a 24 hour deadline. be it for the entire publication, or the last-minute “touchups” that need done to a publication that has been in working phases for months…

True, but a newspaper has it every day, all day, 365 days a year, with no break between them. I’ll bet if you took a word count of a typical city newspaper and a Walthers HO catalog - counting only what changed from issue to issue - you’d find that the newspaper had a much higher “words-per-hour” output than Walthers, and consequently more errors, even if their error rate was lower.

Anyways #1, the thing I found interesting was the post sympathizing with company W for making mistakes under deadline while simultaneously mocking company N for making mistakes under deadline.

Anyways #2, it wasn’t my intention to attack Walthers, defend newspapers, or pick on anybody, so let’s get back to trains. . .

KL

You don’t really expect Walthers to have anyone that would proof-read their rag and check for errors do you?

I bet if you really looked close you would many more mistakes!!!

What makes me sick is what they show in their catalog compared to what they stock in the warehouse!!!

What a joke!!!

HEY!!, I don’t want to knock Walthers, I love their catalouge.

I just want to know whose layout pic won first prize and a little about the crowd standing by the mill.

Thats OK Art. We’re like a bunch of chickens and have to just pick the H out of any little anomaly. You know let the guy who is perfect throw the first rock blah ,blah, blah,Etc. I like Walthers but its aways fun too tease a little.[}:)]

So, all error messages aside, where can I get one of these catalogues? I am just getting back into the hobby and remember drooling over these when I was kid. No wI actually have money to spend on stuff.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Quote from cf7: “What makes me sick is what they show in their catalog compared to what they stock in the warehouse!!!”

It is disappointing to find something not available when you want it, need it, are drooling for it. But catalog has to be made up in advance. I use website to check availability. Catalog sometimes has more info, such as footprint size of a structure, that does not appear on website. Having picture and information available in catalog can be helpful, even if they DON’T have it in warehouse. For instance, I can communicate with mail-order hobby shop having some idea what model number XXXXX is.

Of course, the catalog might say, “not immediately available” or some such…

Welcome to the forum malcolm. I got my catalouge at my local hobby shop. You can also get one from Walthers.

It is the best single reference for “stuff” there is. It is a dream book, a price reference for Ebay bidding, and LHS prices and Flea markets. It is an inspiration for scratch building and finding something you want and you don’t even know what it is. The section that started this thread is also a wonderful inspiration for doing new things. I hope you can find one and join us in the building of a great layout.

We hope to hear from you again soon.

“Walther’s doesn’t have it in stock. Walthers never has it in stock.”

“Why do they even have a catalog…it’s not in stock anyway.”

OK folks, here’s one reason I joined this forum. Nonsense (like that post above) that is posted on this forum sometimes should be corrected.

My fill rate with Walthers is 88%.

88%!!! That means nearly 9 out of 10 things I order on Monday is in stock and will be here for my customers.

And my last Walthers order arrived in 44 and 1/2 hours.

I’m not posting this to brag on me or Walthers, I’m just tired of the decades old stereotype - an image partially made by dishonest dealers - that Walthers doesn’t have half the stuff they advertise.

Times have changed. Your dealer CAN get it from Walthers.

About the mistakes in the Walthers reference book…anyone else on this forum do their job correctly 100% of the time? Didn’t think so.

OK I’ll fall off my soapbox now.
