Seen pics of S.P. U-Boats, painted Orange and Red with White S.P. lettering.Whats this about,is it -i think Sunset livery?? Cheers. Mick
Do you mean the Popsicle scheme ?

I have never heard anyone say they like it.
To be honest, i dont’t like the scheme to much, but it’s interesting.Popsicals-ice creams- haven’t heard that before, for a loco paint job!! I’m guessing brighter is better!! Don’t get me going on the 'Shouldn’t Paint So Fast scheme".I reckon thats a great scheme, but …well we all know what happened there!! mick
Wow, very interesting. I can’t say that I have ever seen that livery before. When did SP try this in the 1970s or 1980s?
'Shouldn’t Paint So Fast scheme"…this could be fun. Never really liked the popsicle scheme either. Any ideas what other schemes SP tried?
Hmm, well, there was that ill-fated livery when they attempted to merge with Santa Fe in the '80s (not sure what it was called?). My personal favorite was their Black Widow livery of the 1950s (and '60s?). Very neat blend of black and silver/red trim/lettering.
I completely agree with you… I love that scheme, too bad some of the colors that the railroads had was so expensive…I guess.
One I liked was the bloody nose in black & orange instead of gray & scatlet.
Dale,
I don’t think that is the proposed merger scheme.
I remember seeing that photo but I’m not sure what it was.
The SF/SP looked more like a warbonnet scheme.
The merger scheme was called the “Kodacolor” scheme, if I’m not mistaken.

You are correct. The merger scheme was a variation of the warbonnet.
The popsicle was only used on four TE70-4S locos. Rebuilds of U25B’s by Morrison Knudsen in 1977. Ten years before the SPSF.

Here is the merger kodahchrome scheme

I’ll admit I love the Kodachrome scheme. I believe there are two Kodachormes left, one on the Trona and the other in a museum.
I don’t like the “bloody nose” scheme, same for the Kodachrome one, and the popscicle.[tdn]
I like the black widow and the Daylight[:D]
The orange and black paint job was dubed halloween buy railfans. The story goes that it was first tried on a HO model in the corp office with a bottle of orange nail polish.
The bloody nose scheme looks great when it is fresh out of the paint shop.I like nthe black widow scheme beter, though.Another SP scheme not mentioned was the Golden State scheme, used only on a few E7s used on the SP-RI train of that name.It only lasted a few years. The top half of the unit was red,the lower part silver.
Another scheme was on SD40R 7342. In December 1980 it was painted in a popsicle like scheme with a scarlet nose, and then later modified with more red to this-
