Since the original thread got locked I’m more than annoyed! Now I’m downright irritated howz that!.. I’m running IE7 with popup blocker running at highest level. Now it wont even let me put a “smiley”; I mean “grumpy” face on this post without lowering the blockers capability. And it would be nice ,as Neil from MR said in the locked thread, to be able to hit the “x” and make the popup go away, but the darn thing flashes across my screen in a millisecond and disappears until I switch to a different thread then it’s back again. And I get grumpier. Any of you tech gurus out there know of a way to fix this without having to download another browser? My wife loves this browser and my issues are not really at the top of her list! Maybe I’m just doomed to orange flashy things dancing around in my eyes.
I have to say that I have the same issue with the pop up, and I’m using Vista and IE8.0.6001.18813.
Every time I go to this forum, I get the pop up. Sometimes, it stays put and I close it. Other times, it just flashes on the screen and then closes itself. This “flash” on and off happens on every page navigation. Even when just hitting the back button, the orange pop up flashes on then off. Every time I go to a new page, there it is for a split second or two.
I understand the point of the ad for those who are not subscribers to MR or Trains, but I am a subscriber. Why do I have to see and deal with this pop up? If there is subscriber-only content, how about a subscriber-only opt-out for pop ups?
Dunno what you guys are doing, but I’m using IE7 with no special settings and I’ve seen this popup exactly twice in the past week, and each time it was only upon initially entering the forum, and clicking the X made it go away for good each time. It did not reappear after that, even though I switched to and checked each section of the forum. Last night it never even showed up.
My only guess is you are being overzealous in blocking cookies so it doesn’t save that you’ve already viewed and closed the popup. I have popup blocker set to medium, but also google toolbar which is set to block popups from here.
IE8 user here not having any issue with the pop up. I see it occasionally hitting the first page of the forum but not after that. I use Google tool bar for pop up blocking, so I guess it is working fine. I happen to like google toolbar as I use the integrated spell check all the time.
Sorry for misinformation. I too use IE8 instead of 7 and also have Windows Vista w/ Google toolbar set to block popups as well.
Mods can lock this thread if you so want too. I’m getting to like the orange-i-ness on the screen which reminds me of pumpkins which remind me of fall which reminds me winter is not too far away and then weeds and grass won’t need attention but the layout room will certainly get more! see ya all later! (whistling out the door to work.)
You do know you can have more than one browser on your computer right? If the wife likes IE fine, let her have it, Download Firefox and use it for yourself. I"m not having the problem with the pop-up in IE, it pops up once when I come in, I hit the “X” and it’s gone.
Internet Exploder does nothing to stop this popup (Default at work). But that is not the point. I will never subscribe to MR as long as they stoop to this type of advertising.
Actually, in my system I got Google Chrome, Firefox and the ever popular IE8 —no popups— of course there are all kindsa popup blockers on this thing [:-^]
Having to click off a pop-up at the beginning of each session is a pretty small price to pay for us having a FREE forum like this. They don’t require that you subscribe to make use of the forum. Getting something for nothing is rare these days!
I used the popup to direct me to where I could renew my subscription to MR since it was due to expire shortly, and it was a couple of bucks cheaper than in the renewal notice I got via snail mail. Granted, it was not all that much, but enough to get me a slice of pizza and a soda at Sam’s Club. Maybe not a free lunch, but close enough. [dinner]
Again, I use Firefox and as long as I do not clear cookies, I can go all over the 'Net for an hour and come back to the Model Railroader forums and no pop up.
Same thing with my stepson who uses Firefox with Vista. He uses Firefox and IE 8 simultaneously at times.
I have Firefox and Chrome on mine. My IE hasn’t worked right since I reinstalled XP, not that it matters. I haven’t used IE in so long I regard it as a fossil in the corner collecting dust. I brought up Chrome early this morning just to see what ad you guys were talking about. It didn’t float around the screen but rather just sat there until I clicked the X. I’ve never seen it in Firefox.
You, as publisher, own the site and can do what you want to do.
When I enter the site my name and subscription is displayed. Use this same technology to not show the subscribers the popup. Those who are not subscribers are the ones you want to reach. Not bug the ones who are currently paying the bills.
