thanks for looking

I see that all the time in Folkston, on the exx-ACL main line, now CSX. Manifest-type trains with a string of IM’s “spliced” in there somewhere, or at the end. I guess there’s nothing wrong with it. Perhaps if traffic has diminished in this recesssion to the extent some people say, it may have just been good operating economics to haul the two different kinds of freight with the same locomotive(s).

P88/217 had the same thing happen a few weeks ago. This kind of thing happens all of the time.

Yup. If you could change the engines to CSX it would be like a lot of trains I’ve seen going through Folkston. BTW great video, Mr. Priddy.

Just offhand, I wonder if those trains are designated “IM” or “Manifest” or what? - a,s,

It also could be overflow IM cars that were added to the manifest to get them to their destination.

Aye aye, Ira! Maybe some CSX and NS hoggers out there could tell us how it works?

I used to see this a lot in the early days of CONRAIL. The trackage rights that the FRA gave D&H gave the D&H priority over everything CONRAIL ran except intermodal. So CONRAIL made sure that there was at least one TOFC on each train.

On the NS they have been combo trains in other words if a train does not have the enough for it they put another train on it. that was a manifist train and they put the intermodel on it, it ran under the manifest numbers. it also took that 60 mph train and slowed it to 45mph because of 1 car.

CN runs trains 118 (SB) and 119 (NB) that were once IM only (stacks & autoracks) but are now typically half 'n half. They have added 198 (SB) and 199 (NB) that are typically all IM. I have also seen IM cars (stacks or 'racks) on 346 and 447 (manifest trains SB & NB respectively) from time to time. I was told that the volume of cars going from point A to B is the reason for it (makes sense, I guess). The last 119 I saw was about 1/4 coke, 1/4 empty box cars, and the rest IM.
