Ex-Great Northern SDP40 at Eola

At lunch today while sitting at Eola yard I saw a very rare sight, an ex-Great Northern SDP40, BNSF number 6327 still wearing BN Cascade Green and Black paint. To see a unit of this age, let alone a former passenger unit is a treat indeed.

BNSF 6327 - Kirk Orndorff - Fort Collins, CO

I thought they traded those in on SD60’s. Sweet. Eolafan caught the lucky dog.

Not all BN SDP40s are still on the roster, and those that still are I belive were rebuilt in the late 80s.

I wonder how long it’ll stay in the 6300s without being renumbered? If BNSF orders further ES44AC’s their road numbers could shoot up over 6300.

Here is what this unit looked like back in it’s GN days. You can see the two gauges for fuel and water at either end of the split tank. I noted today that the gauge on the rear of the tank is gone (where the gauge was is now just a metal blank) as there is no need for separate water and fuel tanks and no doubt the tank now only holds much more diesel fuel than before.

GN 325

Jim - Congrats - great catch. That’s one of those units that I’d have loved to find find ten or twenty years ago too, not just today. (I saw one once buried deep in Bakersfield Yard.) Charles

WOW! That must have been really strange! I would think I was imagining things!

I caught this in Galeva, Ill. 20/july! didnt realize it til i looked @ pics on computer.

was cool to see it!

I was up there working and missed it. Oh well maybe it was on a Galesburg junk train which means it will go up there again as well. Who knows but I will be looking for that one.

I think the Number on the one I saw on the pit was the 3154. It was a GP 50? that was modified for room in the cab for a 5 man crew if memory recalls right.

Well hopefully I will get the honor of riding this old girl. can only hope.

WOW, great catch.
